Hello all please move this to the right forum if this is the incorrect place to ask this question. I do not own a vehicle and wanted to take my firearm to the gun range. I live in Alameda County so my closest range is in San Leandro and the next closest is Guns, Fishing and Other Stuff in Dublin. Can I take a Uber/Lyft to the range and back as long as my firearm is in locked case in the trunk with ammo stored separately? I figured traveling on BART with it locked in case would still leave me open to possible legal issues. I have a range bag and store my handgun(Glock 19) in a Supertool compact pistol case with MagLock on the zippers. This is my particular situation and I wanted to go to the range without having to ride with a friend. Advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Since the law says "A locked container other than the glove box" and "The trunk of a car is considered a locked container," I don't see a problem with a private vehicle where the gun is transported in compliance with the above regulations. The law does not say "You must be the owner of the vehicle."
I do see a legal issue on a public vehicle, however, where you (and everyone else) would have access to the gun.Last edited by Win231; 06-20-2017, 2:48 PM.Comment

It's been a few years since I checked but a legally stored firearm, (unloaded and in a locked case) was not a problem with BART even if ammo was in the same case. I would be more worried about it getting stolen in a grab and run, especially if the case looks like it contains a firearm.
As far as Uber, you would have to check their company policies to see if their are any restrictions. If not the rules would be the same as transporting in any vehicle

I don't know about BART specificly, there could be some special regulations. For uber, so long as it is in a locked in a container such that it can not be manipulated in such a manner as to discharge it or remove it then you are legal. Perhaps a lock-in briefcase?
As far as the contents of your container, it's nobody's business.Comment

Getting an Uber/Lyft ride to the range is one thing, but getting one to head home might be problematic.
Not sure if the shooting range is in a commercial park with many businesses or if it's an outdoor range with nothing around for miles. Some drivers might feel spooked or bias about picking up a stranger at a gun range?
Not saying it's right, but you might encounter issues.Last edited by Powder_Keg; 06-20-2017, 2:53 PM.Comment

You can also consider using Zip Car or rent from a regular car rental place. I've seen Zip Cars at Sunnyvale a few times, some young kids who have guns but no cars do that.Comment

Ugh, this. I bet you could get a ride there but the ride back could be an issue.Getting an Uber/Lyft ride to the range is one thing, but getting one to head home might be problematic.

Although there's been plenty of disparaging comments about the SL range, seems like they'd be a heluva lot easier to get to. Maybe a bus ride, plus a couple blocks walk?
I'm in on the GFOS boycott, but if ya hafta: They're like two blocks from the BART station.I meant, it is my opinion that...

Thanks for the tips everyone. Definitely some things to consider. My case is locked and it's very discreet. It holds my g19 with 6 magazines magnetically with no imprint. I also have the Maxpedition compact range bag. Coming back from the range is the issue I didn't foresee. Maybe I'd be better at the Dublin range because it looks like a regular store and you can't hear any gunshots

Just stuff the locked cas in a bag/backpack and get uber to drop off/pickup at the gate to the WTP next to the SL range. Don't make an issue about what's in the bag. No big deal.
You might have to leave the tacticool mall ninja outfit at home though.Comment
