    Ammo exloding..

I'll be driving to AZ in a month to visit family, and I plan on taking some of my guns to shoot while there. I am going to bring a ammo can full of 762X54R ammo..

To get to the point, is it possible for the ammo to somehow "go off" while in the can and cause an explosion? I would think a ammo can packed full of decent sized rounds could cause a pretty big bang if it all went off.

The reason I am asking is because I will be travelling with my 2 year old son, and since he sits in the back, he would be fairly close to the ammunition. Any input?

    Thanks

Your thinking of the cook off. I'd say the chance of that is extremely microscopicly small. Simply it doesn't get hot enough in a car to cook off a round. Heck it is rare in guns, it is generally a small problem with machine guns when the chamber gets extremely hot and the operator doesn't open the action to allow cool air in and hot air out. It is very uncommon though.

Ammo is shipped all over the world, when was the last time we have ever heard of a UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS truck cooking off rounds? I have never heard of such a thing.

No, it is not possible for the ammo just to explode/go off by itself with other ammo around it. It will be perfectly fine.

You're right, I haven't ever heard of it happening. Just something I was thinking about, I like to be cautious when I'm dealing with my son

You're asking if your ammo is going to spontaneously explode in an ammo can? Because of heat??? Vibration???

The flash point of powder is significantly higher than the inside temp of your car even if it is left in the sun on a hot AZ day.

What kind of car do you drive? You should post a question on the relevant automotive forum to make sure you gas tank isn't going to spontaneously explode when driving to AZ.

I figured I'd get a response or 2 like this sorry for the totally dumb question. But like I said above, I just want to be extra safe with my son in the truck. I don't know a lot about flash point and that stuff, and I have no idea why the ammo would go off, or really any reason to think it would go off. I just wanted to here some input on the subject I guess. I won't worry about it.

I have a trailblazer SS and I am not worried about my gas tank exploding... Me asking if a ammo can packed full of ammo has a chance of exploding doesn't mean I'm some paranoid freak..

They are lying to you. You would be committing a felony if you take the ammo and you cross state lines. I am in SD, you are in SD, just leave the ammo with me and I will dispose of it accordingly. And will let you know if it goes off.

If it gets that hot, I think I have other stuff to worry about!

He's not lying, if you're in Norcal, I am the official drop off point. Let me know when you're coming by, I'll pencil you in.

Sorry, won't be traveling through Norcal. Slighty off topic, but anyone need anything from AZ gun shops?? Nothing illegal of course!!

So I got a funny story about exploding ammo (apology for potential thread jack here---> sorry!)...

It is 5:45AM and I am asleep in my bed. My mom comes in and goes "Nate, get up, we need to get the ammunition off the floor, it is going to explode!" Still dreaming of a hot date with some foreign supermodel, I said "Mom, you are crazy, why are you waking me up now? Ammo doesn't go off by itself." She then relayed the story of some teacher that smacked a rifle round on a desk to kill a fly and it exploded. With my good eye open (trying to maintain a semi-stupor to go back to sleep) I jump off my top bunk, go to my computer and look up what happened. As it turns out, this teacher had a live mortar/artillery round and when he smacked it on the desk it grenaded a la Saving Private Ryan (remember the end scene where they improvised those hand grenades?).

I told my Mom she was nuts and went back to sleep.
