Obscure and defunct shooting ranges

No..... the Chevron Refinery range is still active. It is open to Chevron employees and Chevron contractors. And their guests. It's only open on certain days of the week and certain hours. I know this because I'm a member and I was just shooting there last Saturday.

The san diego police range on Federal BLVD, surrounded by condos and freeways with a gun range right in the middle.

Open 6 days a week to the public, closed Monday, I think hours are 9 or 10am to 3pm? 25 yard only, With a very old tunnel out to the rising target frames. Bullseye targets only, no silhouettes, and its $10 for the day

There was a shooting range off of Soledad Canyon Rd about a mile north of Sand Canyon in Canyon Country that closed in the late 80's or early 90's. Regretfully I don't remember it's name and can't find it searching the net but it's all tile roofs now.

There was a rifle range in Sand Canyon around the same time period that closed and moved back to it's old location to become the Angeles Range. Sorry I don't have it's name either. Way too long ago and I didn't shoot at either of the ranges but I did shoot regularly in Texas Canyon before it closed.

The old Pasadena Civil Defense training center in Eaton Canyon was my favorite. Not sure if Pasadena PD still uses it or not, but it used to be open to the public until civil litigation and NIMBY neighbors caused it be closed in the early '80s. The range had tunnels so you could go out and change targets without a cease fire.

San Francisco Naval Shipyard Hunters Point, had a nice little pistol and shotgun range. Used mainly by the shipyard police and the Marine Barracks.

COTO DE CAZA : Developer Abruptly Closes Shooting Club

A 22-year-old recreational shooting club, one of the few remaining in Southern California, was abruptly closed this week when the developer of Coto de Caza placed a 6-foot-high chain-link fence around it and posted security guards to keep members out.

William Radovich, president of the Coto Valley Country Club, which owns the Hunt Club, said Friday that he was surprised and angered by the actions of Coto de Caza Ltd., a joint venture of the Chevron Land Corp. and Arvida/JMB and developer of the 5,200-acre community in the South Orange County foothills.

Radovich said the fence was erected between 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday around an area of about 5 acres that encompasses the Hunt Club lodge and shooting ranges.

Coto de Caza officials Friday did not return calls seeking comment on Radovich's complaints.

Radovich said the club is willing to move from its present site, for which there are plans to build housing and a golf course. He said Coto De Caza Ltd. had sent the club a letter saying that it wanted to close the facility on Aug. 1.

How many of you remember the Pacific Rod & Gun Club out by Lake Merced off Skyline Blvd?

Used to go there every weekend, in the early 70s, with whichever new handgun my group of friends just got.

If we wanted to drive further, we'd drive down the bay to Coyote Point

Note that I'm not positive that this is the actual range, but it sure looks like it from the photos. Someone said it is now inactive, but I don't know for sure.

I taught a private class there a couple of years ago...nice little range...it is right around the corner from Richmond R&G

You do have to be a Chevron Employee to be a member, but you can get in as a guest of a member

The one right across the street from San Quentin State Prison. First time my dad took me to any range was right there a few times when i was very, very young. Don't know if it was public or for employees/friends of SQ or what. Was a long time ago obviously.

Fort Mason Rod and Gun Club San Francisco

In the late '50's, early 60's, I used to work at Fort Mason Rod and Gun Club, at Fort Funston, across from Lake Merced in San Francisco. I'd help out with chores in exchange for access and shooting. There were few members by this time, and there was an old wino/caretaker named "Packy" who lived there. Sometime in the very early 60's, he fell asleep with a cigarette and burned his dwelling down, with him inside. This was the end of the FMR&GC. They even had a trap house. The whole area was sand dunes and ice plant. The National Guard used to use the whole area for training, and the place was littered with spent 30 cal casings and MG links..... along with remnants of cardboard training grenades.
