    Building a mac 10?

Ok, if you have all the parts, less the receiver, and you are feeling particularly talented, can you legally make a mac 10 style pistol here in California? What are the rules on that? And whichever it is, can you tell me which laws say yes or no?

You can bend up your own receiver. AJAX did it.

M11/9 weld is the easy way, just get the ftf kit then the side plates from cobray and weld it up. Use the search there is a ton of info out there.
      Don't forget the Sten mags!
Best part is no silly mag lock...

I would suggest buying a weld up kit. No one makes a jig to bend the flats, and from what I've heard, the flats out there are kind of crappy. Cobray sells side flats for $44, and FTF has center sections that use cheap and reliable STEN mags for $115. The flats from SKSParts.com still require a considerable amount of welding, plus you have to cut out the magazine well (it's not pre cut).

I welded mine (with a little help) Its quite easy.

As far as flats go, A guy IS selling bending jigs on gunbroker, (they are kinda cheezy but they look like they work.)

          Totally legal, totally do-able...

make sure you don't add any prohibited features, don't engrave any 'banned' markings on it, and you can ONLY make a closed bolt gun.

hmmm this may be my next endevor, building AK's has gotten too easy and boring. What would an estimated final cost be? Gun wouldn't have to be registered either, and If i owned some pre-ban hi-cap sten mags I could use them in the gun correct. And since the mag is in the grip no stupid mag lock either eh?

Cost depends on what tooling you have available to you. If you need to buy/rent anything it is probably cheaper to go buy one (now that thats an option... it wasn't when I built mine) IIRC mine cost me 600 ish but would have cost me around 850 if I hadn't found a great deal on a second hand parts kit. I made a bunch of mistakes and had to rent tooling and a place to build it, as well as having to order a few replacement parts that were not the correct ones.

You can run your pre ban high cap mags if you don't add any assault features (threaded barrel etc.) with no mag lock.

              no registration is required.

Cobray offers them for sale online, go to their online shopping cart and look under 'accessories'

you will need the CORRECT parts kit (be carefull, its easy to order the wrong one and get a submachine gun or open bolt semi on accident)

its beyond simple to assemble, you can literally put it together with duct tape and it will fire (ask me how I know )

the tabs hold everything alighned properly and you just weld along the lines.

its the cleanup that takes a bit of time. (oh and go slow, its easy to distort the sheet metal if you put too much heat into it, tac weld and quench as you go.

I built my mini mac for $500. it was really easy. if you know how to weld you can finish it in about 30 minutes. i dont use a regular grinder to clean it up, i use a die grinder with a 36 grit roloc disc. it comes out a lot nicer. after that it should take about 15 minutes to put the whole gun together.

I've had one of these kits sitting around for a year or so waiting to be built but can't weld to save my life. Any experienced welders around the Orange County willing to help out? Would definitely make it worth your time!

For the center section scroll all the way to the bottom http://www.ftfindustries.com/accessories_etc_.htm

For the side plates go to the online catalog and click on accessories. It's part number ACC-24. http://www.cobray.com/catalog.htm
