At staffed border crossings, both the US and Canada tend to be equally thorough when it comes to visitors. That's not where the problems are.
I believe a DUI in Canada makes you a prohibited person in the US, though that's anecdotal and based on a conversation with a taxi driver in Williams Lake, BC who is unable to visit friends and family in the US because she got caught with a beer in her hand while driving in Canada.
If you're going to or through Canada, know the rules for entering and leaving both countries and follow them to the letter. If in doubt, call and ask questions. If you get caught doing something you shouldn't, like trying to take a handgun into Canada, don't expect any help from the US State Department.Comment

In Canada dui falls under the criminal code. It's a rather big to do.
First time, 10k fine, lose your license for 1 yr
Second time. It's double on fine and loss of driving And jail time for 30 days.
If you get three. Expect losing everything.
Yes entry into Canada does not happen.
In fact, Gwen bush had to get a governance general pardon for entry,so he could meet the pm after his election.
One has to apply for the expungement in the USA, and wait awhile so the database actually sees it removed.
Or the petition, but that is a ream of bs to deal with.
It's takes that much paperwork to take your guns thru Canada. But it's paperwork and red tape. It's not worth it especially if you plan on stopping somewhere and seeing the sights or even hunt.... You would have a few more jumps to make, explainations for the stops, reason for firearms, Where they will be kept, storage... Etc. again, No worth it
Either ship your rifles to ffl in Alaska, collect there Or drive up to anacrotes Washington, ride the state ferry and enjoy a cheap price cruise ( it's the same stretch as the high cruise ships take). And avoid the bureaucratic pain in the *** of Canadian customs

I take a rifle through in my airplane every year. It was only a "big deal" once when they sent two customs agents an hour an a half to Lethbridge, probably because crappy weather had me changing my arrival time using a cell phone in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere Montana. In fact, one time I flew with the rifle all across Canada and only got asked for the paperwork at my point of entry (Whitehorse).
I'll be deer hunting in Saskatchewan in November and will try to remember to report back, FWIW.Comment
