    Which ear plugs?

So, the last time I was at the range, I was using some cheapie foam plugs and one of them must have wiggled itself loose because I ended up with a ringing in my right ear for 2 weeks after, it could have also been the muzzle brake on my rifle, but regardless....I need something better and something that will stay put.

What do you guys use? I don't like over the ear stuff because it gets in the way of a proper cheek weld for me, so I'd like to stick with ear plugs, but something better than the el cheapos.

I use these Here and also have these Here. The surefire ones are pretty good. I like over the ear better and I see now you asked for not over the ear, my bad.

I go with whatever ear plugs I can find plus the green eat protection linked above. They aren't as fat so cheak weld really is a non issue. Especially if using a muzzle break those plugs are gonna work their way out.

Wow that sucks... hearing damage is cumulative and permanent. If you get random ringing in the future you probably have tinnitus. You might want to get that checked out if it was really bad.

I use anything from 3M, or another reputable brand. I trust 3M

Find what fits right, and then buy in bulk. I order mine 200 pairs at a time from Amazon.

Learn how to use earplugs correctly. If you can't put them in right then it doesn't matter how good those plugs are.

I often times double up with some electronic ears, I also use the Howard Leight linked above... indoor ranges almost always. I got used to having the amplification which makes talking and communication easier so I wear them often, but almost never just by themselves. I always got foamies in.

That video is actually really informative....I never inserted plugs that deep, I guess that explains why that one worked it's way it

Just make sure whatever you buy is designed for sound reduction, not swimming or something else.

Look for a NRR rating... you probably want something in the 32db range.

For extended/long range sessions, or in busy environments, you should double up with some electronic ears...

Remember hearing damage is cumulative, so its not just volume, its also how long you were in that environment.

A longer duration at a lower volume (like power tools) can be just as dangerous as a very loud sound over a very short period of time (like a gun shot).

I have the blue ones that are NRR 31. They work just fine. If I'm near a large bore rifle or someone's hand cannon, I'll add the leight low profile electronic muffs over them.

As for proper insertion, that is a must to prevent them from working their way out, and for maximum protection.
                Sorry, not sorry.

You need to roll the foamies really well before using.
In a pinch, .38 brass, primer side in, will work.

For years I have been using those custom earplugs you get made at the gun shows. I have several pairs. Never felt the need for anything else. They never fall out.

Only downside is they are a little painful to insert and remove frequently, so they are not good for training classes, when you need to hear what the instructor is saying. Electronic muffs are better for classes.

I use the Surefire EP4 or EP5 Plugs and really like them easy to put in and out and work very well.

I use custom molded earplugs filtered to allow conversation but very effectively block all sounds above a certain decibel level.
I also made some DIY custom plugs that work extremely well.
I can't hear a thing when they are in.

I use the custom molded foam earplugs from Radian and the Howard Leight electronic muffs.

I used to use the Surefire plugs but stopped because:
                              A) once had the plug detach from the ear keeper and had to have somebody with a pair of needle nose pliers get it out for me
                              and
                              B) They can get uncomfortable over a long period of time.
