    What's the difference?

Two of the most common types of ammo I have put through my AR is Wolf Gold .223 and PMC X-Tac 5.56

Besides the slight difference in muzzle velocity and muzzle energy, what's the difference?

I am no pro when it comes to shooting so I've never really noticed a difference except for price.

You answered it yourself. Wolf Gold is loaded to .223 pressures while PMC is loaded to 5.56 pressures.

What are the advantages to having an extra 20 fps and 16 ft lbs of energy?

Is it pretty much just keep .223 for the range and 5.56 for defense?

How do you know the speed differences are slight? The numbers on the boxes are never terribly accurate and they're measured from different rifles.

If you're shooting milk containers at 50 yards, it probably won't matter much. If you're precision shooting or using them for HD, it may.

            This is an easy answer.

You have two choices between the wolf gold and the PMC Tac stuff.

You can buy Federal XM 55 grainers or you can go wrong. Put another way, you can go cheap and get lucky or go cheap and go wrong.

I'm a bit confused by your post, what do you mean?
Also, what's the advantage of Federal XM?

I only stock pmc xtac 55gr. It shoots tighter for me than other brands I've gone through.

                  It's a play on words.

Federal military grade ammo is sort of the Gold Standard of 5.56 consistent quality.

Wolf ammo and PMC is sometimes good, and sometimes not so good.

PMC has nice shiny brass for reloading, but it is underpowered.

I have shot both. I could not tell them apart while shooting and neither the steel nor the paper targets complained.

If you want full power buy stuff that says mil spec, nato, or something like that. Most of the commercial ammo is loaded to save on powder and for mall ninja purposes.

Get surplus IMI ammo, Black Hill, Menn. Those are always up to par.

Wolf ammo is notoriously dirty. It leaves lots of carbon fouling and residue everywhere. I stopped using it years ago.

If you clean your gun after every time you use it, does it matter how dirty the ammo is?

If it has decent accuracy in your rifle and the price is good-who cares if it is slightly dirty, or 20 fps slower, or the label design is ugly.....

Lol, sad but true. Even though it doesn't make a difference to the bullet, I wish Wolf had a nicer design.
