i always powerstroke the slide if i need to unload and clear a chambered round at the range.

usually it gets the round flying high enough to just catch it mid-air if you have the gun sideways with the ejection port facing up

It's super easy once you figure it out, and the bore gets naturally pointed at the ground if you do it right.

I don't doubt that. But again, what I saw looked rushed and showy. Neither of which impressed me, and I can't imagine why it's a good idea with live ammo.

Yup, I always used to eject the round into my hand like that. Then I took a class from Jerry Barnhart, and he described the exact same situation and the possibility of blowing off fingers, etc. Jerry just does the eject-it-into-the-air move and catches it. I'm not coordinated enough to do that. Jerry's solution was brilliant - eject it onto the ground, bend over, and pick it up.

I always have a timid feeling around guns/ammo. Nothing that makes me use them I effectively but I treat them with respect. If I have a round not fire I keep it pointed downrange for about 10 seconds and when I eject it I do it where the round falls a short distance onto something soft, I always imagine if not done so it could land perfectly on a sharp rock and go off.

Well, if one is competing (the situation in the article) most will tap, rack and keep going. Waiting is not really an option in the middle of a stage.

Also, if you train yourself to wait X seconds that is probably what you will do in a self defense situation as well.

I would not place any part of my hand over a hole that is even remotely suspect of containing an explosive or incendiary anything. Most certainly not on one that I am sure of having a live round inside.

Yep! Kids don't do this at home...we are professionals.

That has been a N0-No for a lot longer than 6 years. Oh well. Next thing you know I'll be reading about the new rule about keeping your muzzle pointed in a safe direction. That is progress.
