New rules at Los Altos range

Looks like the Los Altos range has some new rules, and to be honest, I don't like them. No longer being able to shoot plastic containers is a big one for me. And what's this about having to take a test and get a card? Does this mean if I bring people new to shooting, they'll have to take that test too?

    From their facebook page:
Next month, we are going to make some changes at the range. Please look this over and email rangemaster@largc.com with any questions you may have.
    Beginning April 1, 2017
The following changes will take place:
    1) Plastic bottles on the tin can ranges will no longer be allowed. Tin and aluminum cans only.
    2) A range safety test along with issuance of a range safety card will be required for everyone.
    3) A release of liability will be required of all persons going down range.
    4) Wristbands will be issued to all of our guests and must be left on while on the range.
    5) Our summer hours are 9am to 5pm; you must be in the gate by 4pm to shoot until 5pm.

I happen to like the tin can range there. it's more fun than shooting at paper all the time.

The tin can and bottle range is AWESOME! It's a great way of introducing folks to firearms and loads of fun shooting with kids.

Like I wrote in the first thread, good for implementing the test.

It's actually not that bad. This is what we have to do in Maine even if you are police or military. No exceptions. So I got use to it.

Yes, even old customers will have to take the test. The test is meant to prove that you have read their rules. There are even some questions on esoteric skeet/trap range rules that handgunners and riflemen will have to answer, but the answers are right there in the rules leaflet. The card requirement is not any different than, say, Livermore or Metcalf, got to show it to shoot. The card is good for a lifetime.

The arm band requirement is to make sure you have taken the test and have a card to prove it, and that you have paid the fee. I guess some people had snuck in to shoot without paying (hiding in the trunk? LOL)

Yes, it is disappointing no more plastic bottles to shoot as I had saved three large trash bags of stuff to shoot, now I'm down to soda cans. I guess we have to eat more canned food from now on.

One of their RO's said the main complaints were the paper labels that came off the plastic bottles. They got wind blown all over and beyond the range. The area is unfortunately getting popular with hikers and bicyclists. Soon, what happened to Chabot may happen to Los Altos too. Environmental concerns, etc.

The range up in the Santa Cruz mountains off of highway 9 was awesome to shoot milk jugs

Reactive targets are great for new shooters and shooters who have become bored punching paper..
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

That was my go to range for over two decades,(&coyote clays) but now that I'm in central Texas I won't be stopping by there when I come back to visit. Oh how times are a changing, I feel your pain but Im glad it doesn't actually effect me.

2-5 are pretty common (YSA does wrist bands, for example).

#1 is a problem because so much crap comes in plastic bottles these days - milk jugs, soda/water/sports drinks, protein drinks etc. Only soda and soup come in tin cans i've much outgrown Chef Boyardee & excess sugar.
Oh well, what are you going to do?

Let's face it......The range is likely the place a lot of shooters will fire a gun for the first time and sometimes the person that takes you forgets the most basic and important instruction class....SAFETY. I have no problem with that requirement.
