Be sure the gun/rifle is not off roster. Then gotta find a FFL that will take the firearm in for you. They often charge as much as $150.00 to just receive the firearm and then you have to pay the fees to register the firearm in CA! My brother has done it but with a very friendly FFL and his fee was quite reasonable like 50 bucks! . Find that first! The check CA DOJ to be sure you can legally own the firearm here i.e. not off roster. Can't imagine the hassale if you need to return it! Good luck!

Be sure your READ the sellers ad completely. A lot of people will NOT
ship to CA----even IF the weapon is legal. I had a guy refuse to ship a
single shot rifle, although he did not have a disclaimer saying he wouldn't
ship to CA. Very bad. Another guy would not sell a Leupold hunting scope.

If you are buying from a FFL they must register with CADOJ CFLC and get an approval number before shipping the gun to a CA FFL.

I have bought many rifles and handguns using Gunbroker and Rock Island Auctions. I always made sure the gun could be shipped here -for handguns that meant C&R status, single-action or Olympic Pistol exemption. Work out the fees with the FFL dealer ahead of time. When I bid I am bidding based on my cost to have it home in my safe. I only use USPS money orders or credit card for payment.
Out of more than a dozen transactions the only time there was a hiccup was with a Whitney Wolverine from RIA. it turns out the Whitney is held together by a barrel nut and CA DOJ has informally determined that it is an assault weapon for because the barrel is threaded for the nut that holds it together. RIA and my dealer worked with me to send the pistol back. I do not agree with the DOJ interpretation but not a fight I choose to undertake.
I have had no issues with sellers not following through. I have even been able to get a few who initially refused to ship to CA to change their money minds by politely explaining the process.

                  I've done it 4 times....no issues.

It's gotta be on the Calif. roster....or a revolver able to be modified through Single Action Exemption....or C&R eligible.

You pay shipping + your FFL transfer fee + Calif. state tax if from an FFL sale (if
it's from a Private Party sale, you don't have to pay tax)

As mentioned, make sure you clear it with the seller prior to the auction ending.

Firearm needs to be CA legal.
^Can not be an assault weapon, DD, MG, NS, SBR, SBS.

If the firearm is a handgun, it needs to be on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale or be exempt from it.

No large capacity magazines can be included with the firearm.

Firearm needs to be shipped to a CA FFL dealer.

You need to factor in shipping fees, transfer fees, CA DROS fees, and CA use tax; when determining if it's a good deal or not.

When looking for stuff on GB, always look at their location too. I was looking for a FN 5-7 a couple years back, and there were several ads for them. Then I noticed one of them was located in CA only 40 miles from me! I contacted the seller (who is an FFL who operates out of his home) and went to his place to do the DROS/transfer. Saved on a lot of fees by finding one in CA, and close enough to drive to.

This FFL didn't have a store, so I was not previously even aware he existed. I have bought other things from him since then.

Gun Broker was very useful to me. Just be sure that what you are getting is Cal compliant. I ran into an issue when I was getting a lower last year. It was for an HK AR. Since the lower was exposed, I used a new FFL for that transaction and won't again. They told me it had an FA assembly and hammer. They had CAL DOJ review. It took forever. It was finally released in December and could have lost a decent amount of cash if it went past the new year with the bullet button ban. I called HK and when I told them I was buying only a lower, and in California, their response was, keep your fingers crossed, and also said no way that weapon is FA as designed. CA DOJ actually agreed and released the hold. They took pictures and all. Forwarded to their specialists. Expect a high level of scrutiny with out of state purchases. Happy I got my HK rifle project complete and original, yet it was as bad as trying to get a 911 Porsche turbo smogged in California from an out of state dealer. Beware of headaches, even if you researched your info before the sale. A delay can take a long time and you have no idea what the result will be.

As previously stated make sure your FFL is aware of what you are trying to transfer before you finalize your purchase on gunbroker. We appreciate a call before just so we can verify. Stuff can get tricky when you are dealing with stuff like the roster. Different SKU numbers are listed on some makes and models and that changes transferability. Just double check before you make your purchase to save headaches for everyone involved. Check with the seller to see beforehand what their refund policies are just in case there is a problem with the firearm when it arrives. We've seen people order used stuff online and when it gets here are disappointed in the condition. Be sure you are 100% positive on everything you are doing before you click and commit to buy.
