    Oroville shooting range

    Hello fellow second amendment enthusiasts!

Just a couple questions for ya, I've already been to Sly Park and Spenceville and I've been thinking about giving Oroville a try tomorrow; Is shooting 3/8" AR500 steel targets at appropriate distances okay there? I did see a sign in a picture stating "paper targets only". I also saw some nice tables there in pictures; is taking an hour lunch break to break out my baby 14" charcoal Weber okay? Or would that be frowned upon? I share! Naturally, I bring trash bags and haul away more than what I arrived with. Anything else a first timer to Oroville should know would also be appreciated.

    Thank you friends!!

    You can cook there.
They have a large dumpster there for trash.
They have the sign but I have seen people shooting steel without a problem.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Yep, I've BBQ'd there LOTS of times. Letter of the law says that steel targets are NOT ok, but I've always used them and had no issue. Don't shoot glass or TV's or any of the other trash that causes places to get shut down.

The same rules as Spenceville apply as far as targets, and contrary to nine mil thrill's lies, seen here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ht=spenceville
(read that thread. Great comedy!) lead ammo is perfectly fine to shoot.

Wasn't the oroville range under water recently? I remember seeing a pic with parts under water OR was that another range down river from the dam?

Just don't shoot the dam. That thing can't take one more hole.

3/8" AR500 steel targets at appropriate distances is fine to shoot there. What is not fine is the trash people shoot up and leave. I live in Oroville and have a hard time with people leaving trash behind.

Anyone know what the range looks like today? I wanted to go tomorrow, but didn't want to go if there is to much water. Anyone got a pic from today at the range?

After a rain like we had today, it'll be about half puddles, so I wouldn't wear your nice shoes to put up targets; galoshes would be a damn good idea. Tomorrow will be real nice, but get there early because Sunday is usually busy. The "paper targets only" signs are there because for years it was "bring whatever you wanna shoot the sh*t out of and leave it when you're done". I've seen whole appliances and partial vehicles out there. Steel targets are fine, unless its hot and dry, the DFG may suggest you not use them then, but never had an issue in all my years there.

What are the distances and slope angles of the place? I know that at Spenceville you end up shooting at like a 12-20 degree angle up and the longest safe distance to shoot is probably 350yds. What about Oroville?

It is basically level. The parking/bench area is a couple of feet higher than the range proper, but there are no major elevation changes out to about 450 yds.

There are low target berms at various distances, alternating from the left and right sides with an open area through the center where you can drive out to set targets.

It is funnel-shaped, widest at the parking area and narrowing toward the backstop/hill at the far end. Looking at it on Google Maps will give you a good idea of the layout.

Thanks for the info, I think I also read that there are ways to shoot further but based on Gmaps, it looks dangerous, there are streets past the tree line. Is there an official, "don't shoot past this area" sign? Would love to shoot further but want to be safe and legal.

I also shoot steel targets, never been a problem.
