Question for people w/ grip wraps

First time out with a grip wrapped gun it was a bit awkward holding it, but by the 2nd time I didn't even notice it. As for mag changes, I got used to free-state mag changes real quick.

Yes a fin grip on a go-to rifle is not ideal, but if there's a time where I NEED to go to that rifle, then the circumstances would be very different.

For me, all the grip-wrap does is block my thumb from being able to use the safety catch. But hey - having a gun with no safety is better than not having a gun...

But then these stupid rules are being made by the very same idiots who also want to eliminate the modern safety feature of removable magazines - like it's somehow better to have to cycle each cartridge through the chamber to unload the gun without needing to fumble for a "tool".

I neglected to add that I wound up buying an ambidextrous safety catch because I find the safety to be a worthwhile feature.

I have an ambi safety on one of my regular AR's, and the right-side lever sort of bugs me, it gets in the way of my trigger finger. Thinking about replacing it with a normal non-ambi one. Or maybe a smaller/shorter lever would solve that problem. Have you had that issue?

Yes, I have noticed that as well. I have fairly large hands - so it's not something that gets in the way but is noticeable. I've considered trying a safety with a lower profile lever or simply re-profiling the one I have with a Dremel. Thus far, I've not really settled on a solution or if it's really much of a problem to begin with. The one I have is just like in your photo.

My ambi safety is a plus to me especially with the grip wrap I can use it to rest my thumb on....that being said it is a shorter throw ambi lever on the right. I got the axts I'm liking it so far

I tried a grip wrap and a monster man. Great innovations and cheap.....

But then I orderd a Thordsen. I REALLY did not want to like the FRS-15. Thought it looked funky.
But I actually use my AR's for high speed games...USPSA and multi gun....and the FRS-15 is hands down the winner IMHO and for what I use it for. YMMV

I personally went featureless and found it very easy to handle the gun. I can hold the gun up with one hand as long as its shouldered. I had some of my friends who never even shot an AR said it isnt that bad just kinda weird not using your thumb. I like the idea of removing my evil features with the turn of a screw rather then being put on "another list" or riveting in a mag button. plus I made my own so I was able to mold the kydex more to my hand and give myself an advantage. honestly I dont know why people would buy the pre made ones when it cost less then $20 and I was able to make it for 4 guns.

IMHO, the FSR-15 is vastly superior to any of the grip options available. It maintains the best functionality and there's nothing to "get used to" if you own a conventional rifle. It just naturally fits the shooter. All the other options are inferior because they try to keep the traditional look of the AR but at the expence of functionality and performance. The AR is fundamentally a tool and therefore function trumps form. I really don't care that it's more of a departure appearance-wise. I'm not hung up on the appearance.

With the exile thumb rest it's easier than a pistol grip with a bullet button

Depends on how your grip wrap was cut and what stock you're running. If you're running an A2 stock and the grip wrap makes contact with it, it might be a bit harder to hold on to it. On a pinned extended stock, you should have space between the stock and the grip wrap to grab on with your thumb, which will allow you to maneuver the rifle without shouldering it.
