Gun trepidation

I have a Spanish Mauser FR-8 in 7.62 NATO that is very lightweight and has a metal buttplate. Every time I shoulder it and shoot from the bench, it just pounds my shoulder like a jackhammer. I'll admit to shooting it less and less over the years. Guess I'm officially too old to engage in the manly art of recoil anymore.

Whoops that's what I meant. I enjoy the 12 gauge, but I'm not ready to feel the full brunt of a 12 gauge 3" magnum slug, shooting on a bench.

I feel like I might need to put on a bite guard.

I find some firearms annoying to shoot.

And really old firearms sometimes give me pause since I don't know what kind of shape they are in.

I love the big 3 foot fireball my AK pistols make.

The first time I fired a .500 magnum I had a bit of concern about wether or not I would be comfortable with the recoil...so I only loaded 1 round. That one, and the next 12 hit 10" steel at 100 yards. No biggee.

Was a beautiful gun that shot laser straight.

Would I buy one? Only if money were no object. Would I shoot one again? You bet I would.

I haven’t found one yet that I was afraid to shoot. But I have never shot any magnum rifle rounds yet. The only time that I am a little concerned is when I buy a handgun that requires fixing. When I fix them, I aim down range and stand a little off to the side.

My Model 629 used to hurt my hand when I fired .44 Magnum out of it, so I wore a glove. But not lately, for some reason.

Maybe my hands are getting tougher.

Probably loss of feeling because of lead poisoning.

Some of the C&Rs and antiques I've shot over the years, including Swiss Vetterlies, converted to centerfire. I was lucky so far, but I inspect these guns first, and sometimes the first few rounds are fired off an old tire

One of the guys who used to hunt with my dad shot a .460 Weatherby. Standing next to him my cheeks would pucker just anticipating his trigger break. Deer didn't like it much either. They would do full back flip when he hit one.


Probably why my hearing is so bad now.

A guy I knew from the races (he may be lurking here still!) let me try his 560 Linebaugh hog-huntin' pistol a few years ago. It was beautiful.

One round was enough.

Dad's old NM Super Blackhawk 44 was nuthin' compared to that beast.

I had a single shot 10-gauge 3-1/2" mag shotgun when I was young and resilient. It was like a Mike Tyson punch- you knew it was coming but there was no way to prepare for it.

It was a real goose getter, though.

Biggest handgun cartridge I shoot is a 44 magnum, but not all 44 mags are the same. The 5" S&W M629 is fine with full power loads. I bought a 3" M629 specifically to shoot warm 44 special loads out of. Of course I tried a cylinder full of full power 44 mags out of it, but just to see what it feels like. It only sees 44 special loads now.

Also got a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum with 7.5" barrel. This one is notorious for being uncomfortable to shoot, mainly because of the "Dragoon-Style" squared trigger guard. Supposedly it pounds your middle finger during recoil, but I didn't have that problem. But it has a serrated trigger face, and after 70 rounds, it was cutting my trigger finger pad raw. Stupid thing kept slapping my finger under recoil and since it is an older model with polished bluing, I didn't want to bleed on it. So I reduced my load down to the equivalent of a 10mm (200 grain bullet at 1200 FPS) and that solved the problem.

For rifles I don't have anything bigger than 30-06 which is fine for me. The one gun I won't shoot is my buddy's AOW 12 gauge with 3" magnum slugs. That actually hurt.
