    Trap/Skeet Shotgun

    What's a good beginner 12 gauge semi-auto trap/skeet shotgun for ~$1000?

Im in the same boat. Ive been using my Mossy JM PRO, which is not ideal. Ive identified the Beretta A300 Outlander, the Stoeger M3000, the CZ Redhead o/u and the Franchi Affinity as good candidates.

None of them are under 500 but all are under 1000.

I would look strongly at the Remington V3 and Versamax, which are slightly more than your target but worth the slight premium. Also an 1100 might be a good buy. I have a Remington 1100 Trap and its a pretty sweet shotgun.

I changed the original post, I may as well spend a little extra and get a semi-auto.
Thank you both for your fast replies, I'll keep those guns in mind too

At exactly 999, the Benelli Montefeltro is a sweet semi-auto for skeet and trap.

Bought my beretta a300 as my first trap gun. Purists boohooed my decision for not getting a browning trap gun. But recoil is non existent and while the default is slightly small for me, my wife and I are able to trade off in the game and share so she loves it too.

Visit your local clay shootin' range and look at the bulletin board for used shotguns and research the ones in your price range...ask to try and buy, shotgunners are some of the nicest folks I've met.

Hawkman where are you located? Coyote Clays in San Jose rents Demo guns you can try out and even buy if you like. I shoot there during the Summer months.

I use my Versamax for both trap but it's not ideal. Short barrel causes me to swing it a bit fast. Also every frigin time I go out there, the RO has to measure my barrel (22" min). With my choke I'm just a smidgen over 22"
Benelli Super Sport is on my short list but way over your $1000 point.

Also try posting over in the Shotgun forum.

A dedicated trap gun will not make a good skeet gun. Trap stock are designed to make the gun shoot at a rising target and are generally longer length barrel with tight er chokes. Skeet guns are design to cover a swinging target with a field type stock and are generally shorter barreled and very open choke. That my take, as my dedicated trap gun an 870TB was not a good skeet gun.

for an all around gun, Berretta A300. if you buy slightly used, you can get 2 for a G.

Its Beretta first of all, so it isn't junk and should last a LONG time if not lifetime. it has lighter recoil, especially with kick off system. Its a workhorse gun. 28" barrel..good all around gun. I have a A400 with 28" (very similar to A300) and i don't have any probems with trap. Sporting clays and 5 stand require more skill but i hold my own with the 28" in those.

If you want to get super serious, do it after you buy the A300 and get some trigger time. Once you know what you are looking for, you can get a dedicated gun for whichever suits your fancy..or buy one for each

I doubt it is a good skeet gun due to the barrel length. I don't think there is a shotty that excels at both specific games (without changing barrels) but i could be wrong. I don't know much about skeet though so there's that.

Google different games with clays and you will find a wealth of info. They are different and some may require a different (shotgun)set-up. Trap is generally the easiest of them to learn.

Saw a 20 and 12 at my lgs the other day. Great guns. I use my a300 for duck/goose hunting. Awesome gun too.

Agree with others - go rent or shoot a friend's shotgun to see what works for you.

Find a used Citori o/u. There are several grades but the inexpensive ones shoot just as good as the top of the line ones, and you'll never break it.

If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous!
If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid about?

Why Semi? With skeet you can load two, with trap, one. Semi for these games is silly.

Unless you want a semi-auto that you can USE in both sports. Then it's just a barrel choice for the sport you're doing at the time. Make won't matter.
