Yup, I listened to the recruiters best pitch, and despite all the references to "elite" and "special" things I left the conversation thinking "that doesn't sound like much fun at all." I'm not at all surprised some of them got busted for partying too hard on their trips.

Not surprising. Us west coast people don't often get a chance to see the President in person. I had the pleasure once to do so and there is a lot of heavy security like you describe just off frame from the cameras and press. It's weird because once you see it you realize the media goes through significant effort to avoid showing these security measures. I suspect they do so out of obligations in their embed agreements to be in the press pool.
