Transporting handguns, ammo, between NV and CA?

    Hey all,

Will be heading up to Frontsight this next week and wanted to know if there are any 'gotchas' specifically regarding transporting handguns and ammo. I thought I heard that there might be a law (if not in effect now, being pushed for or coming into effect possibly soon?) that will no longer allow you to bring ammo back into CA regardless of where you originally purchased it. I don't think there are concerns like this at least presently, but just wanted to double-check.

Just came back from LV with ammo (in my checked bag), and pistol in a locked case in my checked bag - no problems. Flew Southwest.

Thanks guys. We're driving out there, not flying. Either way, doesn't sound like there will be any issues. Looking forward to it!

Lock up the unloaded pistols and take or bring back as much ammo as you like.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Is it cheaper to just to buy ammo out there for that matter? Like at Walmart?

BTW: is it OK if the guns are not in locked containers/cases but have cable locks on them? NM I think I found the answer here - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/a.../t-934961.html

So it seems I could A) just use the cable lock and wrap that around the handle of the case to effectively make it a "locked case" and then B) throw everything in the trunk (which is a "locked container"). Option A would just be for added assurance...

Not necessarily. Some cops, if they can pry the container open far enough to touch the handgun, will cite you. Why invite trouble? If you have the dough for a class and distant travel, you have the dough for a Pelican case and two padlocks. Do it right.

Well, technically a friend of mine gifted me the course... and since I'm going with a couple other friends, cost on gas isn't very much.

That said, I have a couple GunVault 2000s, so I theoretically could bring one with... the gun cases I have do have small holes for a small padlock (or some kind of lock) - I tested with a couple travel padlocks I have (not the cheapo plasticky kind but ones that are all-metal combo locks) but you can still open the case far enough, if you get the lock at the right angle, to touch the gun. With the cable lock you can pry it about 1/2" to wiggle your finger in and "touch" the gun as well. I just want to avoid having to buy more cases, etc if I don't really need to. I'm assuming then that bringing the GunVault w/ the guns in them would be sufficient?

What about the whole argument of the trunk being a 'locked container'?

It is. If the firearms are in the trunk, then no need to lock up anything. Also, if stopped for any reason do not consent to any searches.

Thanks - yea I found out about them last night and started looking at the site. It appears that there's no sales tax at least for pickup orders in NV? And they close around 7pm too (or at least, that's the last time option given for a pickup)?

My buddy and I may end up just doing this, so as to avoid taking from our current stockpiles
