Evidently, the ban on weapons other than 'official purposes' extends to the parking lot as well.

One way to find out why the post office does what it does and why and who they are is to get hit by a mail truck. One of our service trucks was and getting things squared away took a lot of time and legal help. And, yup, the armed postal security force showed up at the scene to protect the mail while it was being collected and accounted for and transferred to another vehicle.

They may seem quasi but when push comes to shove their shove is remarkably federal.

Actually it has to do with the robberies that occurred at post offices, mail trains and postal courier's in the early 1920's.

It ain't guns on the property that are a problem, it's using them to rob the PO/train/courier that is the problem.

i do not get it, why no carry in a post office? ... but any crook looking to rob a post office would not care about a no guns police anyhow.

First, what the U. S. Postal Service is and what it does are defined in Title 39 of the United States Code. See 39 USC 201:

The general powers of the USPS are set out at 39 USC 401, and its general duties at 39 USC 403. Its organization and governance are set out in Chapter 2 of Part I of Title 39 of the United States Code.

But as to why the USPS has adopted regulations prohibiting, with few exceptions, weapons on its premises, I doubt there's really any answer beyond the usual "public safety" meme.

Don't forget the parking lot is also a no gun zone. Even if unloaded and locked away in your trunk you are in violation.

They want to keep guns away from postal workers after what we went through in the 80s.

Seriously though, with the whole going postal thing, they are probably just trying to prevent that again
