Depends on the rifle and the cartridge. It also depends on the use. Target shooting zero for bullseye. If used for hunting zero 2.75" high at 100 yards.

OK if just for target shooting try for on the bullseye at whatever(usually 100yards) range you shoot at mostly. Makes for better bragging. I usually do not care if mine is high(but on target) as long as all the bullets go into the same small area of the target---Prefer into one hole.
You may have trouble getting it to shoot on the bullseye since the sights on the rifle were designed for a 325 yard(approx.) bullseye zero. It may still shoot a bit high with it adjusted to shoot as low as possible.

I always zero at the distance I intend to shoot at. Since it only takes one round to zero (I use a second round for fine tuning and a third for confirmation but, it really only takes one) at any distance, it's not a big deal to rezero when I plan on shooting at a different distance.

Yea around 100 yd is the longest I've shot and wanted to be able to hold higher for longer distances etc

I would use irons for short distances. Which is a reason why I'm doing a PU mount and scope for it

for .223 and .308, a 50 yard 'zero' is almost same POI as as 200 yard zero and allows you to aim point blank and hit in the kill zone to about ~@275 yards without any hold over. Hope that helps.

Ima put a scope on the handle sight on my AR. But the one I can use the irons underneath

A Mosin iron is zero'd at 800 yards FYI. so essentially, you will use a scope for close range shooting and irons for longer range. Haha.


Anyway, 100 is perfect for target shooting. My target gun zero at 100 my hunting guns at 200

Not sure about Mosin's, but I like to zero my .30-06 at 200 yards, I use it for hunting. That way, any shot within 275yds or so is (assuming it's an accurate gun) POA +/- 3", which is good enough for me.

There are plenty of charts and calculators online that let you see the bullet trajectory given different zero distances, using those tools you can usually make a good educated guess at what your zero distance should be for your particular situation.

If it was mostly just a range gun, I'd just zero at whatever distance I mostly shoot from. No reason to complicate things.
