New law states that an AW is one which does not have a fixed magazine.

OP could have a featureless rifle and can't find the original mag release. Would a BB/mag magnet featureless rifle still be considered an AW?

Featureless is featureless... BB or not, it's not an AW.

dieselpower is so tough and brave. A true warrior.

But, why is he not showing a full picture of his rifle with evil features and the mag magnet? Why only the close-up of the lower receiver?

I agree that the new regulations contradict themselves on the bullet button but you are going to get some unsuspecting calgunner in trouble with his local LEO. Is that your endgame, to create a test case?

This is a stupid thread that should be deleted by a mod. I'm surprised it's being left alone.

I agree with your interpretation, but it was a similar situation with shotguns with detachable mags. Then the new regs included shotguns with detachable mags as AWs also. I would guess our interpretation is not the same as the DOJs interpretation.

1- A Bullet Button is not a fixed magazine.
2- A SACF rifle with a BB and an evil feature is an AW.
3- New AW law clearly states a BB is a device where a tool is needed to detach a magazine and a Detachable magazine needs a tool and furthermore ...a BB + mag button is a detachable magazine. They are all the same thing as per the law.
4- Under the new AW registration law, the only prohibited thing is changing the release mechanism.

read for yourself, bold added for clarity

Thanks for the reminder mine arrived in mail today.

5471. Registration of Assault Weapons Pursuant to Penal -Code Section 30900(b)(1);Explanation of Terms Related to Assault Weapon Designation

1- (f) "Bullet-button" means a product requiring a tool to remove an ammunition feeding device

2- (also 5471 (f) says bullet-button equipped fully functional semiautomatic firearm does not meet the fixed magazine definition under Penal Code section 30515(b)

3- (m) A Detachable magazine is one that can be removed without disassembly of the action or use of a tool. Please read #1 again.

a BB equipped firearm has a detachable magazine as per the AW law.

4- Under (m) they specifically state a BB+mag button is a detachable magazine. Why? Because a BB is a release device requiring a tool and is not a fixed magazine and if a tool is required its a detachable magazine, and a mag button doesnt change what it is.

5- 5477 states after registration the magazine release mechanism cant be changed.

The only thing a person needs to worry about after registration is what the word "change" means.

The only thing a person needs to worry about prior to registration is does the addition of a tool on the firearm void the legality of the ownership prior to 2017, and there is no law that supports that.

6-up til 2017 regulations, there was no law or regulation that defined what a BB+mag button was. We all shied away from doing that because we felt the legality of a the BB was in the fact the firearm itself lacked a detachable magazine without a tool, so the addition of the tool gave the firearm itself the ability to detach the magazine. That was never proven in court nor was there ever a law stating that.

Thanks for the reminder mine arrived in mail today.

So why can't a magnet be a "tool?"

                      It can be a tool.

prior to 2017, the law was determined / assumed to say the Magnet button created an AW because it voided a BB action of requiring a tool if left on. The tool became part of the rifle so the rifle now had the ability to detach the magazine.

The same was said for people who tied a screwdriver to a string hanging from the rifle. The tool is now part of the rifle, so the rifle has the ability to detach the magazine. This was assumed and never proven in court.

All that has been changed in 2017. Having the ability to detach a magazine is not what makes an AW. The fact its not a Fixed Magazine does.

A 2016 SACF Rifle +BB + feature is an AW.
A 2016 SACF Rifle +BB + Feature + Mag button is an AW.

Enjoy using your "dust covers" and "solvent traps" in public. I'll enjoy less crowds at the range while you argue your xx-amendment rights to your cellmate.

i can use my solvent trap and tool in public without fear.

you might want to check with the BATFE on solvent traps, because they are 100% legal,

and please point me to a CA law that says I cant use a tool to detach my magazine.

maybe if you kept up with current events these things wouldn't confuse you.
