Magpul secures Marine Corps contract

Yup. Awesome news. The M3's are set to be the standard and IIRC the M3 revisions are compatible (reliable) with L85's and other NATO non-AR platform rifles which had spotty issues with the M2's. Also I haven't seen anything yet on whether personally sourced 40 round M3's will be acceptable but I sincerely hope someone can side with them or sea-lawyer for them since a 30 round magazine in an M27 runs dry really fast. -

I wonder if this will impact the price on the civilian end.GO NAVYComment

It's about time....they should've had that contract awhile back.
I have a bunch of GI mags of varying vintage....none of them are as good as a standard Magpul.Comment

Some of us used magpuls already while in the corps.
Heck, I've had guys use their own optics when I was in the sandbox. This just means that magpul secured another healthy investment.Originally posted by longrange1my gun shoots better with shiny brass...plus not only does the shiny brass make me look like a pimp at the range if the sun catches it just right it blinds the guy next to me which improves my odds of winning the match.Originally posted by XDJYoFull size. Out of curiosity, what's the problem with aluminum USGI mags?
Why are plastic mags better?
Considering large scale issues; manufacturing, reliability, weight, cost, disposal/recycling.
Kinda seems like aluminum mags would score higher overall.Comment

How well do these mags stand up to abuse and sand? I am actually interested in your opinion as opposed to mall ninja ones. Only rifles I ever really saw in the USN was M14's and they were not subject to extreme abuse or sand.
I have only ever used USGI type mags for the most part in AR's.Comment

There is nothing at all wrong with the aluminum magazines. There are a ton of problems with magazines being maintained properly as well as armory custodians trading out malfunctioning magazines for good ones, then either leaving them laying around until someone reissues them or intentionally putting them back in the good pike rather than DRMOing them.Originally posted by Ant45Plenty of people who don't frequent internet forums are blissfully unaware that their guns suck.I don't understand. My old friend and room mate, whom many would consider a mall ninja if they didn't know he was in the corps with me, turned me to 3rd party gear. How well do these mags stand up to abuse and sand? All of his magazines were by Magpul and I remember ribbing him for having plastic magazines. See, I grew up with the old USGI magazines since my dad was in the Army for so long.
They went through mag dumps on 3 round burst (it's what our A4's had), held up fine during the heavy rain and many a night spent out under the stars.
I didn't own them but having seen what they've been through, I knew they'd last. He also had an old aimpoint which back in '04, I didn't know who they were.
Only thing is, since he was an attachment to our unit, I didn't spend 3 tours with him so I can't comment on how long he had them. This was all during OIF II.Originally posted by longrange1my gun shoots better with shiny brass...plus not only does the shiny brass make me look like a pimp at the range if the sun catches it just right it blinds the guy next to me which improves my odds of winning the match.Originally posted by XDJYoFull size. Tolerances and consistency are two of the bigger reasons that an injection molded, plastics magazine CAN BE better than a standard aluminum magazine. My experience has been that metal stamping do not yield the most exact, dimensionally sound product. If you measure some of the critical dimensions, like the distance between the top of the feedlips to the mag catch recess, then you'll see significant variation between metal magazines, even from the same manufacturer, but this is less of a problem with well made, injection molded mags. Now, if a company doesn't do their due diligence in the engineering and mold making process, then they're going to have a crappy injection molded magazine (I won't name any names, though).Comment
