When SHTF ~ Everyone Please Participate ~

    Guys,

It all stated with me looking to store ammo for long term. I recently bought an Ammo can and was thinking what to do with it? Obviously it won't hold ALL the ammo I have, so I thought of making a Bug-Out Ammo Can. Sounded like a good idea, however, my thought process is missing something....

That's why need you all to share your feedback; help me pick weapon of choice and "quantity of ammo." Out of the list mentioned what you you change, and why? So here goes - -

    1. .22LR - large quantities can be carried and used for multiple reasons @ close-range. I have a mix of Federal HV Match 600 rnds, Mini Mag 200, Subsonic 100, Fed HV 100, CCI Standard 100 = 1100 Total rounds.
Guns: Buckmark Target pistol, and CZ 455 Varmint target rifle.

    2. 9mm - A mix of SD ammo, ranging from +P GOLD Dots, +P Golden Saber, Win T-Series = 180 Total rounds.
    Guns: Sig 226 & S&W Shield.

    3. 5.56 - XM855 120 rnds, XM193 180 rnds = 300 Total rounds.
    Gun: AR (obviously)

    4. 7.62X39 - Tula 124Gr, HP = Total 60 rounds.
    Gun: SKS

    5. 12G - 00 Buck, Slug, #4 Buck = 51 Total rounds.
    Gun: Mossberg 12 (8 shot)

TOTAL WEIGHT of ammo can is about 20-30lbs.

What do I keep/eleminate from the Bug-Out ammo can. Carrying all those guns is obviously impossible, unless I have friends or other shooters in the family, which I don't. But I do see the purpose for each one specifically.

Why not take an AR with a chest rig full, you can get them cheap....

Personally I think you need more ammo. Especially if you have to sit tight for a day or two.

Now out of your list what would I take, and I'm going gun wise with as much ammo for each that I could carry or transport. The Buckmark, and I'd try to find a 10/22 takedown just for ease of transport in a pack. The Sig, maybe the Shield as a back-up, and the AR. All popular caliber's that you can probably scrounge.

I gave up on the bugout ammo can some time ago. Instead I have my buyout bag (backpack) with several days worth of clothes, food, water, supplies and ammo.

Since my primary EDC is .40 I have 200 rds of .40 and 200 rds of .45 (my backup EDC, which will also go in the backpack), plus 200 rds of .556 (which I will ditch if I end up without an AR depending on the bugout situation). Not sure how much the ammo weighs, but the backpack is manageable and usable in an emergency.

Your worried about ammo weight when you have so many guns to carry?

Just the AR and one of the 9mm's is all I would carry.

            You only have two hands.

Do you want to truly bug out and get the heck out of wherever you are, or do you want to unintentionally go looking for trouble? 80-20 rule. Sounds like 80% of what you're prepping for may at most be 20% of what reality may really bring your way. Define your mission, then take your pick.

or you could have special cache sites in different locations, just in case you lose some, could happen in a raid or theft , fire, etc.

dont leave all your eggs in one basket, the VC used to have several hidden ammo / weapons caches in secret cache sites, could be out in the jungle or hidden in the local cemetery like they did during the TET Offensive in Saigon.

My advice is to consolidate loads. Your ammo is all over the place. You know that your POI will change from load to load right? Not as much of a big deal in pistols, but it is a big deal in rifles especially when the purpose is hunting game.

Stick to the cheapest, most reliable ammo that fits with what you need. I primarily stock XM193 for a reason, it is affordable, accurate, reliable, and good for multiple purposes even though it might not be the single best at one purpose.

Edit: and if you plan on using a shotgun for SHTF include birdshot. In a survival scenario birds are some of the most plentiful game around and you don't want to get stuck trying to hit birds with single projectiles.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Is your intent to eliminate everything but one gun or caliber?

Dump the heavy 200 rounds of .45. It'll slow you down.

I plan to scavenge ammo, weapon upgrades, and power ups from dead guys. Make note of respawn points and beware of campers.

Just bring the AR and the 9mm. Since you had to bug out and run from your castle, just kill, capture or steal everything else.

3 loaded magazines of quality JHP for one pistol.

100 rounds of quality 556/223 SP/HP for the AR.

That should be way, way more than enough ammo to see you through the next LA riot.

                              This

How far are you going to need to walk to get to where you're going? With a rifle, side arm, 400-500 rounds of ammo and the rest of your gear. How many miles a day do you think you can cover? Hayward to Manteca is 50 miles if you're heading east. Chinese Camp is 100.
