Would you conceal carry in this condition

i conceal carry mainly my Beretta Px4 Storm compact - it's DA/SA and i carry it in condition 2, which is round chambered, hammer down, i don't have a safety, only a decocker

obviously my first round would be a DA full length pull, followed up with SA shots

lately at the range i've been toying around with the half cocked feature, (it's actually about 1/3rd) as my DA during practice, it really lessens the amount of pull needed to break the trigger, creating less chance of drifting off target from a longer pull

question is - would you carry in this condition? do you see any issue with it

as stated, i don't have a safety, i installed the low profile levers and slide, creating a type G Px4, decocker only

obviously i would never carry my Storm with the hammer fully cocked, but i am wondering about the repercussions of carrying 1/3 cocked, hammer won't drop unless the trigger is pulled to complete the DA sequence, but it does provide a smoother, shorter DA pull

What ever your comfortable with , I personally would not want to draw my gun and have to rack the slide or deal with a safety . I carry a glock condition 1 .

I carry my Sig P938 in Condition 1: round in the pipe, hammer cocked, manual safety engaged. That said, it's good to practice disengaging the manual safety as part of the fluid act of indexing and presenting.

      Seconds count.

My CZ P-01 decocker puts the pistol in "half cocked" position which is what they recommend for defensive purposes.

I carry my PX4 with one in the chamber, hammer down so my first pull would be DA.

good to know, im not familiar with the CZ - personally, i don't see a problem with it, lessening the DA pull without being in a hair trigger situation seems like a positive, if practiced enough to know what you're dealing with

i know some people don't like going from DA to SA when shooting, but that's not my issue, it's more about the safety factor around carrying 1/3 cocked

have you ever considered the 1/3 cocked carry?

My pull in DA at half cocked is the same weight as with the hammer down. There is just a bit more slack in the trigger at half-cocked. I also have a CZ with the safety and, my personal opinion, I prefer a DA first pull over carrying with the safety when it comes to the potential for an accidental discharge.

that's my line of thinking too - in a fast paced situation the last thing i want to do is have to think about doing anything other than defending myself as quickly as possible

i've never been in that type of high pressure situation - "things to do" before pulling the trigger probably won't be the type of mind set i want to have

i already know i can react well, i know my mentality, still don't want to turn it into a procedure check

No, because I'm not familiar with the pull weight at the 1/3.
So I'm not setting myself up for success if I'm carrying my trigger in a position that I'm not familiar with.
If you're going to train with your pistol 1/3rd cocked, then you should carry with your pistol 1/3rd cocked.
But set yourself up for success so that you're not in a gunfight with your pistol in a condition that you haven't trained for.

OP, I don't think you'll even notice the DA pull if and when you have to engage. You'll have enough adrenaline you won't even remember precisely doing it. Carry the way you wish, obviously, but unless you're taking a longer range, precision shot, that longer, heavier DA won't get in your way.

The hammer won't drop at all if something gets between the hammer and the slide while the hammer is on the half cock notch.

Carry hammer down, practice hammer down, stop over complicating it.

excellent point, made it well worth me asking

and, as Aces pointed out, it's not really that much of a difference between what i get out of 1/3 cocked and hammer down

maybe i am over complicating it, i was just wondering if it was a feature that i wasn't taking full advantage of

One important point is that 1/2 cock is often a safety feature and is NOT intended for regular use. Do a quick search on 1911 for an example.

I wouldn't use any of the "features" that are not explicitly condoned by the manufacturer or seriously tested and proven as "known good configurations."

I think you misunderstood. The gun had been racked, there is a round in the chamber, but the hammer has been decocked so it's not all the way back. The safety is off. This simply makes the first round a Double action. All he has to do is draw the gun, pull the trigger, and a round will exit the barrel. On a Single action hammer fire, he'd have to cock the hammer before firing.

With striker fires (well, most) like my XD-9, with built in safety systems (double trigger, handgrip release etc.) you generally walk around in something between Condition 0 and Condition 1 since the build in safeties are "always on" and it's your proper use disables any safeties on the weapon when you draw and fire.

I carry my PX-4 .40 full size the same way. I played with the idea of 1/3 or 1/2 half cocked but have decided that one of the things I like about the hammer fire pistols is that the pull is so heavy and it's much harder to accidentally discharge the gun because of this. I simply make sure that the first round out of every mag in insert at the range is a DA shot.
