Well, I'm not so sure, that's the "best".

Sure, the sentimental value of receiving it as a gift is nice, but it's also cool to be the first in your family to buy one. Out of all my family, including extended family, I'm the first and only one to have firearms. Came to that conclusion myself and took the initiative to get one (several now actually). Living out the 2A, passing on that value to my kids, and being an example to the rest of my extended family. That's pretty neat too.

And let's say I wasn't the first in my family to own firearms. It's also a proud feeling to work for it - sort of like buying that first car on my own.

      AR-15 in 5.56/.223

I prefer the AR. It is flexible enough to fill many roles, from recreation to self defense and hunting.

It is modular and easily customized by even the worst kitchen table handimen. It is cheap, you wont find a more accurate, reliable, semi auto center fire rifle than a basic AR 15.

A big plus is it is the firearm The Man doesn't want you to own.

A 10/22 is also a great rifle, especially for kids and young adults. But the AR-15 is THE modern Kentucky long rifle and should be in every gun owner's home.

Roy Rogers approved six guns at age 3 and Daisy BB gun at age 5. Used Dad's guns til 15 when mom and dad got me a 12 gauge for Christmas.

I started my son in a similar way, pellet guns to about 6, then my 22, then his own 22 at age 10, his own 30-06 at age 13, and a 20 ga at age 14. That was years ago and he has added many himself.

          A Smith & Wesson 500?

with a 4 inch or less barrel?

Seriously though, it's got to be a Ruger 10/22.

God, who didn't get a ten twenty two as a kid?

            Ruger 10/22.
First gun I bought with my own money. Mom actually signed the paperwork, but I laid down my money. Of course, that is likely a straw purchase nowadays, but back in the day it was pretty cool.

My first was a Springfield XD40. I was over 44 y/o at the time. I bought my oldest son a Rossi .357 for his 21st birthday. My two younger boys got Ruger 10/22s for Christmas in 2014 ($79 Black Friday specials from Turner's ) and they were 18 and 19 y/o at the time. I'll get them pistols for their 21st also.

There's a good argument for both the 10/22 or the AR15. The 10/22 is a good plinker and has lots and lots of mods available. Pretty cheap to maintain and fire also. As has already been mentioned the AR is a good all around weapon and the customization possibilities are almost endless. It is also an All-American weapon. I don't think you could go wrong with either of those.

I grew up with guns around. First one I bought as an adult was a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. I defy you to find a more versatile gun than a 12 gauge pump shotgun.

My first gun was a Colt AR15, at age 18, in the army.
                            Loved it.

First handgun was a Glock 17 - love it; accurate, 100%reliable, easy field stripping, easy maintenance, over 1000 rounds between cleanings (with good army-supplied ammo).

I love guys and gals who are buying their first gun on their own. It's never too late to see the light and find freedom.

My dad was against the idea of buying me a gun. He didn't buy a me a gun until he gave me an O/U shotgun and I had probably owned literally a 100 different guns at that point in my very late 20s.

In his defense, he now gives me multiple guns a year. He finally came around to the fact that he might as well just get me what I want.

The first firearm I ever shot was an M4. First firearm owned was an XD45.

"Best" is very subjective so it's definitely going to be different for different people. There's a lot of factors.
