    The best 'first' gun

    Fair warning---I'm opinionated
    In my opinion---
It is the one that's given to you when you're old enough to be trusted.
Rifle, shotgun, pistol matters not. A .22 is good or course, but it could just as easily be some obscure military caliber or even 16 gauge.
What matters is that your parents trust you and that it is a right of passage to adulthood.
That such guns are often passed from generation to generation as 'first' add to the continuity of lineage---something modernist social engineers have surgically removed from the experience of our children.
I could go on. Maybe I will later.

I genuinely feel sorry for you guys and gals who, as adults are buying your 'first' gun on your own.

There is no perfect first gun for everyone or everyone's wants and needs.

A .22 rifle is almost always a great starting point. Handguns are usually not the best place to start.

For every "rule" there are exceptions. I have a friend who fired his first gun as an adult. It was a 50BMG rifle. He was hooked. He ended up ordering his first rifle soon after that. It was chambered in .510DTC. He immediately started competing with it and was immediately recognized as a talented 50 shooter. I think the first gun his daughter ever shot was his first 50. She too is a talented 50 shooter.

Both my sons started on my Savage MKII .22 which was the first gun I got when I left home at 19.

Then for their birthdays they each got a AR15. After all it is Americas rifle.

Don't feel sorry for me, OP. I may not have had my first gun handed down to me but I managed to find my way into gun ownership on my own, even if it was as an adult.

My first gun was a Toy Shotgun / Cap gun and you had to reload your shells.

Then I got a Red Ryder BB gun.

for my 13th Birthday I got a Single shot .410 Break action by New England Firearms

My next gun was a Remington 870 Express won at a CWA dinner

Yup. Your first pocket knife and your first firearm were rites of passage. Those time honored traditions are practiced no longer. The social engineers have been adept at destroying all the great institutions of our society.

Dad started teaching us to shoot when we were 5 or 6 years old, I don't remember exactly (I was young at the time) but I distinctly remember it being prior to entering 1st grade. So my first gun is going to be different than a 40 year old prepper who's just realized the utility of firearms.

                              In order:
                              • Daisy spring powered BB gun
                              • Deer rifle (Savage 99)
                              • Air rifle (cheap to practice with)
                              • 12 ga shotgun (Rem 31)
                              • Ruger MK2

The last one was my first purchase as an adult.
