I've only seen it used here when speaking of CA CCW holders. A bit over 2/10 of 1% of the state population holds permits, so they are the often spoken of as "rarely seen mythical creatures" within the CA firearms community.

I agree with this to a certain extent. Some people throw this term around for glocks etc.

But most people use it correctly. My Colt Grizzly pistols are unicorns, double diamond set, Combat python, snake eyes etc. There is a Valtro 1911 for sale that is most certainly a unicorn. Most of the time a unicorn is a "expensive", rare gun.

I first heard it 5 years ago and only occasionally since. usually in the AK world. North Korean part, Stechkin, prototype magazines sometimes....
Ive personally never used it as it sounds kinda dumb.

Curious as to its origin. It seems to serve as a preparation lube or kind of a "are you sitting down" precursor.

To me it seems to evoke visions of white fluffy clouds sprinkled with rainbows which draws me right out of the gun buying mood altogether.
