Safe for ammo

I have a spare bedroom closet designated just for ammo. No reason for a safe, my house has a dog and alarm. My safe is for guns and optics.

There is no way that one of those can hold the weight of a substantial amount of ammo. The ones I have at work are only slightly thicker gauge metal than an aluminum can.

i have noticed that most newer/new file cabinets pale in comparison to older variants, although there are contemporary file cabinets of high quality that will hold substantial weight. i have an OldSchool Remington Rand file cabinet that can handle an incredible amount of weight with drawers functioning as intended. this cabinet and others that i own would easily house large amounts of ammo if i chose to use them for ammo storage. because i have a modest collection of older file cabinets, it is of interest to me that there are old Remington Rand 'Safe-File' cabinets that weigh 900 pounds.
Remington Rand was the leading manufacturer of the 1911A1 .45 ACP pistol used by the United States Armed Forces in WWll and was in business from 1927-1955 before being acquired by the Sperry Corporation.

I have one of these style cabinets.. and does WELL holding the garage power tools and car crap. Altho, this is an older steel cabinets. Its nice and thick metal. My Grandfather used to keep his guns and reloading stuff in it.

Same here, plus I worry about extreme temps in my garage for long term ammo storage.

I have a couple of those gun security cabinets (older, like 80's I guess) that I drilled through and installed hardware for 3/4" plywood shelves. Each Cabinet was like an 8 gun or something. They work well for securing the ammo as it won't fit in the safe.

I use an older Craftsman bottom Roll away chest. It is well made, lockable, and can handle the weight.

No need for a safe for ammo unless your affraid someone is going to steal it. Even then ammo is worth far less than other items.

Protect your guns, not your ammo.

Meanwhile the legislature continues to make laws that do nothing to deter criminals.

I use a job site tool box in a spare bedroom. $15K plus worth of ammo in metal containers to control combustibles in case of fire.

I started to have a second fire safe for ammo, until I discovered it held guns too. Now it's almost full of guns and coin collection. Need to rethink that plan, coins need a smaller safe freeing up more room for guns.

What's the lb. per shelf weight rating on cabinets like that?

Since they're intended to hold office supplies, would they even be weight rated?

Don't know what weight limits they have but I can tell you that mine are full and have not broken or even sagged.
