I have a M1A and like it. My brother has the SOCOM and likes it. Optics were easier for my NM M1A than his. Once we got the correct mount/rings his was not a problem.
Both have been very accurate and no problems right out of the box.

      I got both. Love both.

In our current climate I'd go for the 308 AR.
Then get the M1A next year since it's not currently threatened.

Just a heads up, most manufacturers offer discounts on patriot holidays. Next weekend being one. I have gotten many lowers from JD out of San Diego for cheap. I believe a AR10 lower is $300 if I am correct. You could look at an SR716 piston 308 rifle for discount and have a really nice rifle out of the box.

So i thought just to do an outright purchase of a complete, been looking and all thats left is 16" barreled rifles in AR platform. Thats what gave me the thought of just getting a nice Springfield.
Check out VC Defense in Thousand Oaks. They have an incredible selection of AR parts from various makers in stock, and may have some AR-10 recievers as well. Give them a call.

Had an Aero M5 build and I didnt like it as much as my M1As. I have the Scout 18.5" and a National Match. I do not recomend the SOCOM, 16" is too short for an M1A.

Never had a problem mounting a scope to either.

The biggest pro for the M1A is you dont need a Bullet Button and you don't need to register it as an AW next year.

The 308 ARs have better ergonomics (pistol grip, cheek weld, etc.) But that is all pretty much nullified by having to use a Bullet Button.

If you do go the 308 AR route, I highly recommend buying one that is already assembled, it is cheaper in the long run. DPMS are good on a budget, but the LMT MWS is probably the best value right now. The LaRue PredatOBR is excellent but way over your $1800 budget and you probably wont be able to get one before the ban.

If you just want to shoot tiny groups you might as well stick with a Bolt gun.

If you live in socal, Ambrose armory has matched AR10 upper and lowers for $400 in the box .... That price is for both together.

You can get lowers from Aero Precision.

About 100 days ago I built one using an Aero lower, DPMS parts and some Magpul parts.

Be really careful about getting the right buffer tube if you are using a collapsible stock. It is easy to get the AR 15 part, and it most certainly does not work. In my case the AR 15 part came in a bag marked "AR 10".
What about the 19th? Can the Commerce Clause be used to make it illegal for voting women to buy shoes from another state?

MIA and don't even think about an AR10.
