I had to do a SHD once and nearly got in a fist fight with the guy behind the counter. I feel like I did what he told me to do, like four freakin' times in just the exact order that he specified but he flipped out and accused me of being drunk but told me I passed anyway. Dumbest thing in the world. Luckily I'm exempt now.

I have never been asked to do the SHD, guess I'm just lucky.

Do you really think it's the "pretentious kids" fault SHDs need to be done? If you were given a responsibility to sign off on a SHD would you just let it go or would you be looking for someone to perform it to your standards? Way to chit on people just for working a gun counter.
I did have to show a guy at Turners how to operate a K31, but the way I see it he learned something and didn't take anymore than an extra 15 seconds.

Turner's had to bring in the gun from the warehouse so I won't be doing the SHD until I pick it up tomorrow.
Half or so I was just asked if I knew how to use the gun and the FFL did not make me do it.

I was only ever asked to do it once before becoming exempt.

But ignoring the CCW for the moment...
I've done them at time of DROS, but usually it is a "pick up day" ritual.
Yes, there have been a couple of times when it was forgotten.

Turners is the only one that I've bought from that did the whole "Here is what you do, now do the same" as if I were a 3 year old.
Most times it's less formal... just do it and sign.
I think the times that it was "forgotten" were because the employee was simply watching how I was handling it during test gripping and inspection... Not unlike CCW qualification that is more a safe handling demonstration than it is a demonstration of shooting ability.

From what I remember, I have been asked only once to do SHD. Do I have to surrender all my guns?

Most of us from back in the day before handguns were on a list for being safe(rostered).

I've only been asked to do this once if I recall, probably because the shop I buy 90% of my stuff from knows my face. Plus, I buy stuff experienced people normally do, maybe that's why. If I wanted to look like a noob, I'd buy a Glock...

I would have said something. If I have to waste time in a Dr office, I better get something out of it!

I've bought 4 now and when I bought my first one at a local gun store...the guy knew that it was my first, so he basically did the demonstration for me lol

3 guns later, I look at the gun play and with it a little and sign the form. Never have been asked to demonstrate it lol

What exactly are you suppose to demonstrate? Are there specific things or is it just up to the gun store?

It is a specific list of tasks.
Receive the firearm, verify visually and physically that it is unloaded and clear. They do tend to freak out when you put your thumb over the breech and verify the barrel is clear of squibs and debris, they'd rather watch you stick your pinky in all 10 chambers of your .22lr revolver.

Load a dummy round into the magazine (or insert the dummy into a chamber on a revolver)
Load and chamber the gun (or close the cylinder with the bullet in position to fire on the next trigger pull)
                                Press-check to confirm loaded.
Unload, again visually and physically verify unloaded and show clear.

Edit: Forgot, it also includes removing and reinstalling the child safety lock.
