Whether they like to admit it or not, German identity is more or less about blood. You are either German or you're not. If your line of heritage is something other than German then the heritage is colloquially mentioned with the citizenship "German-Iranian" "German-Turk", etc.

Heh, I initially wrote "Turks and Gypsies," but on reflection removed Turks since they have their ethnic country. It was to make it more of a trick question.

After so many years of continuous authoritarian governments and two world wars fought on their home soil somehow the idea of the self-preserving citizen is widely lost on the Germans. What has come to replace it within the last 100 years or so is the concept of the "state monopoly of defensive violence" (the state alone has the right to use or authorize the use of physical force, see here: https://www.britannica.com/topic/sta...ly-on-violence). The public generally expects the system to keep the people safe and falls into a helpless state of shock upon each realization that it cannot possibly live up to that expectation. The rationale of the defensible citizen is not something that I expect to somehow return to the German conscience at any point in the near future.

What do you want the Germans to do? Eastern Europe isn't exactly the place to national self preservation. Look what happened to the Ukrainians when they tried to stand up against the illegal immigrants. The Ukrainians were caught in the cauldron between the socialists to the west and the illegal immigrants invading from the east. Didn't work out for them.
