First off, I'm not trying to change your view, it's yours and you're intitled to it!

Second, if you publicly tell people you hate the platform & you have your reasons, please include (like you did here) that you never sent it back to be fixed

Well, let's take a look at that statement.

    A Mini requires no BB
The Mini is not on the chopping block (yet)
    No AWB (yet)
& not to long ago a lightly used 581/2's could be had for $450 or less

Yes, rack grade AR's are potentially more accurate than the Mini, OK....... How many other rifles can we put in that group, do they all suck because the AR can be more accurate? It's up to the individual to determine if the pros outweigh the cons when purchasing an AR or Mini in Ca.

I've had my mini since 1984 before ARs were cool and no it won't shoot 2 inch groups with cheap military ball ammunition that takes 52 grain bthps
It has never had a single issue in thousands of rounds not one jam misfire so what if you can take a AR apart on the kitchen table you most likely never will need to with a mini even if don't ever clean it.
So how good does the average 600$ AR shoot with ball ammunition? I've heard military spec is 4 inch's?

This thread makes me want to go shoot my Mini-14 for groups, first with bulk ammo, then with my handloads, and report back.

And then maybe an iron-sighted AR-15 for comparison, like a White Oak Armament A2 Service Rifle.

Would love to see an iron-sighted White Oak upper vs a 581/2!!!
I think we all know who would win, but by what margin is what intrigues me!

Thank you! As you may know, I'm a noob when it comes to firearms and many things. I was sent here by my LGS for information regarding firearms legislations. Thank you for enlightening me.

Mini 14's are decent. My main gripe is the magazine price and the "AK" rock-n-lock method for inserting them into the rifle. I got to shoot a new basic level Bushmaster ($800 free state, sorry) a few months back along side my mini-14. I felt the trigger on the mini was better but not superb. The AR did balance a bit better but I'm sure if it had a piston too they would match pretty well. The edge in ergonomics going to the AR. At 50 yrds I could match them using Walmart Federal .223 accuracy wise in slow rhythmic fire. At 100 there wasn't much difference either on single shots.

All and all if this is your only option, don't worry about it. At the end of the day it's better than having nothing.

The AR vs Mini/featureless debate is a complete waste of time. The real problem is the OP having to dance around his family.

OP, what does your family have against the Sport? A gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun. The Sport is a tool and is no more or less objectionable than the Mini 14 is as a weapon that can kill people in the appropriate hands. How is your family OK with one rifle but not another one. That's about as nonsensical as anti ideology and I would sooner understand your family preventing you from having ANY gun, not just narrowing in on one type of gun.

Finally, why can't you just buy the gun that you want? Do you still live with your folks or something like that?

I don't always save the world, but when I do, it's in 24 hours or less...

They don't know anything about guns and they brush me off whenever I try educate them. They watch the news too much and see the gun get a bad name and they say, "No one needs a killing machine like that."
I do live with them and moving out isn't an option right now.

Anytime I ask them about a gun, if the picture of it looks "non-threatening" they say they're fine with rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

Put it this way, here is the same gun with two different configurations:

                        I see: Mini-14 Ranch Rifle
                        They see: Deer Hunting Rifle

I see: Mini-14 Tactical (Not going to be blinded by flash at night, can safely grip the gun, can move the stock to fit me so I can use it safely.
                        They see:

Honestly, I'm probably just going to go buy the M&P 15 Sport II and keep it out of sight for a while.
I'll just need to make sure that the first time they see it, that it has a bipod, doesn't have quad rails, maybe change the stock? I don't know exactly what to do, I don't know how to think illogically.

The irony for you is the Mini 14 was used in the most deadly lone wolf mass shooting in modern history. Anders Brevic murdered 77 people with a Mini 14 in Norway.

I've seen most factory new AR 15s shoot about 2 inch groups. The 4 MOA standard of the military is what they consider a rifle acceptable. Meaning sometimes a rifle that is 30 years old on its last legs shoots 4 MOA. The armorer isn't going to fix or take a look at it until it gets larger than 4 inches.

That doesn't mean the rifles aren't generally more accurate off the rack. Again since I've been out and shooting brand new rifles the accuracy you get even from cheap AR 15s is impressive.

Moot point though, Ruger told me 6 MOA is acceptable by their standards for a new Mini 14.

It just proves youre a liar and have to exaggerate and blame the rifle for your lack of skill.

Nah, you are the liar who is saying you shoot 2 MOA with cheap ammo with your mini 14.

I'll give you $100 if you can do it in front of me.
