Attempt break in

I read the "what if threads", and then someone tries to break in last night at my girlfriends home. She called me,after 911, and said she woke up and a guy with a head lamplight was trying to jimmy open her slider in the bedroom. So she screamed loudly hit 911 and luckly the guy ran off.

So next week its off to the range ,she has shot before and likes it, but needs more time to be safe with a gun.

I was going to get a small safe box that can be put in her nightstand with a electronic lock, already have plenty of options to fill it.

Anyway it was pretty disturbing to her and her daughter.

Next to my .45 in the lock box I also have a C2 Taser. I don't think my wife would use the .45...so I have the Taser.

These lock boxes, how long does it take you to open one and take out your gun, how many seconds? I personnely keep a gun under the bed at arms reach and one in a dresser at arms reach, small bedroom.

You may want to enroll her in a defensive handgun course also.

I know this has been said before but you should keep your firearms in a real safe when you're not around and keep your HD weapon close at hand when you are home. You may not have time to open a safe in a hurry, especially when under stress and half awake. Glad to hear the guy ran away.

Are you willing to tell us if this happened in L.A. County, and if so, which part (downtown, San Fernando Valley, South Bay, Long Beach, Glendale/Pasadena area, east, west, north, south)?

I'd like to know.

In addition to the main safe, I have a number of different smaller pistol safes...

The Mossberg InstantAccess (no longer made) with a numeric lighted keypad, press 4 numbers the spring loaded door pops up.

Then there's the GunVault versions (standard & biometric) which utilize a "memory groove" fingerpad or actual biometric fingerprint recognition which opens the safe. http://www.gunvault.com/

Note on these safes... I recommed MOUNTNG them, more secure in case of break-in while away (burglers will have to work & make some noise to get it) and when actually accessing them, it's better... when I got my 1st one, I didn't mount it and noticed shortly that it would shift a bit sometimes when pressing the keypad or removing the pistol. The Mossberg was great for this as you mounted a plate, then attached the safe on to it securing it from inside... mount the plates where ever you want move the safe around as needed - heck I put it in my luggage when traveling.

It only takes a couple of seconds with either (biometric is a bit faster) but you'll have to make some comfort/judgement calls with your girlfriend and her child. I keep empty chamber/loaded mag (EC/LM) pistols in them mostly, but before going to bed open the one in our master bedroom, chamber a round and place it under whatever book I'm currently reading (While Europe Slept... you guys gotta read this one, especially if you liked America Alone). I just don't like having it in plain sight - even though the likihood of waking up to a stranger standing over me is remote, with the layers of security in place.

The thing to consider: Empty chamber/loaded mag is safer with a small child around, but in a stress situation - bad things can happen when having to chamber a round (mis-feed, short stroke, etc.) which can jam you up. Personally I stomp around the house with a pistol EC/LM within arms reach... my 4 year old has been exposed to it plenty and (so far) respects it's purpose. A couple of middle of the night alarm senarios where she was moved from her from room to ours and left with her armed mom while I went to investigate had to be explained... she actually thought it was "fun" one time.

I agree. May not seem like a romantic gift. However, a gun says "here I want you to be safe". IMO much more caring than any other gift you can get her.

I have a .40 cal Sigma that she likes alot, just need to PPT to her. This was in Davis, I will look in the paper tomorrow, the police came within 5 minutes and brought a K9 unit, in amd out pretty fast. They were still cruising the area when I got there.
