How much defensive ammo is enough?

OK, so buying specialty ammo is going to be a real ***** soon, with out-of-state and online sales being banned. So obviously I need to stockpile defensive ammo for my handguns and rifles. So what is an adequate-sized stockpile? I know the answer is, "As much as you can afford," but I'm looking for a number of rounds. I'm not talking about range or plinking ammo.

Billy Idol said it best- "Too much is never enough"...

      Depends on the caliber.

Depends on how much cash you have at your disposal.

1,000 rounds per firearm is my goal with no less than 1,000 rounds per caliber.

See my thread on supply and demand before you go waste money on hoarding ammo.

If prices are cheaper now then they eventually will be, how exactly is that wasting money?

Prices will be down 18 months from now. And you'll see full shelves, mark my words.

Stock up on ammo that's hard to find in stores or not even sold in stores, I.E. high grain .223, 5.56, 308, 7.62x51, etc.
***PSA: Don't be that guy and post "Contact me, I'm interested". Dummy, YOU'RE the one who's interested. YOU contact the seller! ***

I just got 9mm for 14cpr. How much cheaper is it going to be?

I would think as we get closer toward Jan 2018, the prices on ammo would increase due to everybody in California trying to stock up. After Jan 2018, then prices on ammo will go down after none us Californian will be able to purchase online.

There likely will be an upswing as prohibited persons and those scared of the gubment rush to "stock up," but there will then certainly be a balancing downswing immediately afterwards and a long term downswing as casual folks refrain from their once a year range trip because they don't want to pay $50 for a background check.

I am primarily concerned about ammo that I can't find at my local gun store, for example, Federal HST rounds. With online and out-of-state sales being blocked, it would be difficult to find them at my local gun store, and even if available, the store may charge a premium. I'm not concerned about the ammo that I can find every day at the store, of which there is a supply. I'm concerned about what I should get while online and out-of-state sales are an available option.
