I am a parent and have never asked this question or been asked.

If someone asked me this question, I would ask them if they have properly trained their child what to do if they come across a gun. If not, why? If they argued, I would ask them what their child would do if they came across a wild dog or a rattlesnake?

If someone asked about guns in my home, I will answer truthfully.

I would expect them to do the same for questions I ask them, and without being coy about it.

"what's with that smelly pool of green crud in your back yard and the dog with two tails?"

"Oh that? that's nothing. Your kids are perfectly safe. Heck we tell jimmy that he is better off having a third arm."

Fortunately in my area when a parent asks me if I have guns it's because they want to go shooting 😃
We live on acreage and I've had more than one parent tell me it's fine to let their daughter shoot (I only have a daughter) if we want to do some shooting during a play day. And yes we live in California.

            Not a valid comparison.

If other parents ask I'm honest and tell them I do have firearms in the house. I also let them know that they are all locked up and wife and I are the only ones with access to them. I generally don't ask if other parents have guns. Mainly because I'd don't only believe in making access to my firearms child proof, I also make my children "gun proof". They all know the "stop, don't touch, and tell an adult" rule.

                  Yes, it is.

You teach your kids to avoid rattlesnakes and wild dogs. You would teach them to also avoid guns.

I've never been asked, and I don't need to ask them since my child knows not to touch a firearm unless it is handed to him by me or my wife. No exceptions.
It was not a threat. It was an exaggerated response to an uncompromising stance. I was taught never to make a threat unless you are prepared to carry it out and I am not a fan of carrying anything. Even watching other people carrying things makes me uncomfortable. Mainly because of the possibility they may ask me to help.

and to reverse the question, do you ask other parents the same question?

The question parents will ask you is "are there any firearms in your house?"

Your truthful answer, and I'll tell you why in a minute, is 'NO'

Here is why your answer is true/correct.

As long as your guns are locked in the safe, they are technically locked and separated FROM the house of which the parent is asking.

However, if the parent asks "are there any firearms locked in the gun safe located in your house?" - Then that's a different story.
What happened when the parent you told "no" to later found out that you owned guns?

Them "Are there any guns in your house?"

Me " Does your husband know you are cheating in him?"

Them " What? I never! I can't believe you asked that."

                              Me "Exactly"

But you can relax, They will stop asking because Jerry Brown just made all guns safe.

They flat out believe that their little Johnny would never touch dad's guns because dad trained him and told him not to.

I would never tell someone how to parent their kid. If that's the decision you've made in your house, that's fine. But don't ask me to trust your kid and your firearms training...especially when I hardly know you.

I wouldn't be mad if a parent asked and I would give them an honest answer. If it bothers you, then politely refuse to answer the question...but expect that your kid may not have many play dates.

And yea, I ask the question...and a whole lot more...I want to know who is home, who will be supervising, I want both parents cell phone numbers, whether or not there is a pool, and the "boy" situation. When you have daughters you always check the boy situation. How many brothers does Suzy have and what are their ages? Etc.

And personally, I think you'd have to be crazy not to ask these types of questions...particularly with people that you just met and hardly know. Keep in mind that it may not even be an issue with the owner's kid. How many other kids are coming over? Kids love to snoop. Maybe they're playing hide and seek in the house and some kid hides in the parent's closet and finds the loaded shotgun or something.
I ask these types of questions all the time. It seems weird to me that others don't. My wife and I don't hesitate to answer the question about guns, mainly because it opens up a grown up conversation about firearms. If I trust this person/people enough with my kids, they are already people I know pretty well, and have already passed my background check (pets, siblings, roommates, etc.).
