Recommended by the instructor. So, yep. The 'snake' part is only 12" long. Pushrod came with the gun. Also, I am a tool whore, so there's that. No apologies.
Dang right! Don't apologize. Everybody cleans their weapons differently, and everyone thinks their way is the right way. Don't listen to them; especially the people who tell you that you haven't shot it enough, yet, to clean it. You can clean it as often as you want. You can't get it too clean. Sometimes, i haven't had a chance to go to the range in a while so i will go out to the garage and show my guns a little love. Even though they are already clean, i can still give them a little spritz of oil and a soft cloth rub down. They like that! You take care of your guns and your guns will take care of you.

I just like to smell my gun..., weapon shield cinnamon ... ( hope that's not weird)

Now go buy a big Tupperware box for all the cleaning products.

You took the gun out shooting without cleaning off the factory packing grease first? I'm amazed you had only 1 failure.

One recommendation I have is to go to your local hardware store (e.g., Home Depot or Lowes) and get a pack of those painter's rag. You can cut them up and use them to cleaning the pistol or cut them into small size and use them as patches for cleaning inside the barrel.

Wow, excellent job. Sounds like you did very well for your first time. For me, shooting a pistol well is a little like playing golf, it takes a lot of practice. One trip to the range I'll shoot very well and the next trip I might not be able to hit a barn door. Over time I get better and better.

You are off to a good start. Welcome to the club.
sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

I have a mound of rags in my garage. Made them from a couple of sets of worn out bed sheets. These sheets probably had close to 500 wash cycles. Very absorbent Egyptian cotton cut to 6x6 inch squares. Not a fan of those painter's rags - not as absorbent as I like, and DUSTY/LINTY . danfinger no like. Bad medicine.
Its year 2016 and major manufacturers no longer have to use globs of grease on their products; it makes the gun hard to sell because customers usually would like to handle them. They'll put a thin layer of corrosion inhibitor which is the slightly oil stuff you see when you field strip. Those are great for preserving the gun but not so good as lubricants. You'll be good to go now since you've clean your gun with Ballistol, but when you get your next gun, just clean the stuff from factory off and apply your Ballistol or any other CLP and you'll be good to go. I have the same Px4 9mm myself and I remembered seeing that thin layer of oil too when I got it.

Those cotton sheets you have are great but you don't have to baby the Px4, it is a duty pistol and not a delicate target shooter. I use painter's rags for guns far more expensive than the Px4 too, they won't hurt the gun.

Agree 100%. danfinger, by starting out the hobby with your wife is actually the smartest thing you have done. People may disagree with your choice of firearm or cleaning methods, but at the end of the day, the only person who can stand in the way of buying more guns and ammo, the person whose approval you need to start the kids shooting, the one whose permission you need to take classes and professional instruction, etc. was there shooting with you.

Good job. Keep her interested in the sport and you'll get much further with her onboard.

You realize of course that you only have about 2 more range trips before you or your wife are out shopping for another gun, right?

It's just not acceptable for one person to have to wait for their turn to shoot
