Plate Carrier at the Range

This topic has probably come up but I didn't find anything when I searched.

Although I shoot at a few different ranges, the one closest to me (and the one I shoot at most often) is usually extremely crowded with new shootrs. I have been swept a few times now and I am a bit concerned about taking a bullet from someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

Would it be ridiculous to wear a plate carrier to the range in this situation? Better safe than sorry in this case?

Yes it would be ridiculous. My friends and I would make fun of you mall ninja.

If you get hit my a ND at the range odds are it won't be center mass on your back or chest. You'll probably get hit in the side.

Talk to your RSO, if your range doesn't require casing and uncasing at the firing line they should. It will cut down on this problem.

You could always wear a lo-profile/minimalistic carrier under your clothes. No one will see it. And if you do look like a mall ninja, i'd rather look like a mall ninja rather that be shot dead by a noob so theres that.

Did I say it wouldn't be life threatening? Any gunshot wound is life threatening in terms of shock/infection, or hitting an artery etc.

It's just that a plate carrier likely wouldn't do him any good. When was the last time someone was hit center mass of the chest or back from a ND at the range?

If you don't feel safe on a public range talk to the RSO to correct the violation, if they don't work with you find somewhere else to shoot. I don't shoot at Barnwood in Ripon anymore for this reason.

If I went to a McDonald's often and found out they often had e.coli I wouldn't take chances, I would go to a new McDonald's.

If I felt unsafe at my range, I wouldn't take chances, I would find a new range.

Because it's like wearing a life vest at a hotel swimming pool. Actually no it isn't, people actually drown in hotel pools all the time. People rarely ever get killed by negligent discharges at ranges, and if theyou do a plate carrier wouldn't have helped.

Its not illegal and may save your life, if you want to wear it then wear it simple as that.

I always wear at least my soft armor at public ranges, I've been swept at every range I've ever been too. My department also requires us to wear either soft or hard on training days.

It's good to wear equipment while shooting. If you own it, you must have at least a theoretical scenario to wear and shoot at the same time.

But shooting at an indoor range rarely fills any of those scenarios. Yet another reason I wouldn't shoot at a "range" if you paid me.

If you were a friend of mine, I would give you nothing but sh**, while I help you adjust it properly.
Do what you want, but if you are worried about taking a bullet to the point of putting on armor, you need a new range.

Armor is for folks that anticipate taking fire. If you can avoid being shot at all together, do that.

What range? Sounds like this place is bad for the sport.
Talk to the RSO or club management. If the problem persists, find a new range. Wearing plates would be like putting a bandaide on a spurting artery wound.

And don't be too quick to condem the newbies...I've seen poor range behavior from all sorts, from range regulars to military to LE and everything in between. At least the newbies wil oftenl listen to advice whereas some of the others seem like they know it all and when they screw up they puff up and get all indignant.
