I wouldn't call a gun being slammed into an MRI machine or subjected to fire "on it's own".

I do recall reading a gunsmithing column wherein the author mentioned having a pistol fire unattended, while in the pocket of his leather motorcycle vest. It was a cheapo striker-fired pocket pistol that he usually carried there, and he was in the habit of leaving it in situ when he took the vest off and hung it up in the closet.

Cheap is as cheap does, and he was sitting at home one evening when he heard a muffled shot. The relative parts, either defective or just crappy, had given way and let the striker slip and fire the gun, thankfully jamming it after the first shot.

With a quality piece, I'd say no, there has to be some kind of other influence happening. Old open bolt sub guns like the Sten were famous for discharging if bumped on the buttstock, when inertia would bring the heavy bolt back far enough to disengage from the sear and let it fly forward with a bang.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

Yes it can & it has. Some people have learned the hard way that if a Glock is in a soft IWB holster & they move a certain way, the holster material has entered the trigger guard & caused the gun to fire.

            That's not on it's own.

Absolutely, according to these types of Anti Gun "experts":

Yes it happens all the time.

The gun is safely stored for years, then some yahoo starts playing with it and the gun suddenly discharges all by it self. Oh yea, I can see it clearly now. Pass the lib cool-aid please.

Yes. A gun can fire a round by itself with no outside influence. Though I'd guess you're more likely to win a billion dollar lottery twice before you'd even almost encounter such a gun.
                    Exactly.

If the op is just looking for a yes or no answer then yes, there is a possibility the gun go off by itself.

But the chances are basically nil. You are more likely to get stuck by lightning and while you are in the hospital you find a winning lottery ticket in one of your get well soon cards, and at the very moment you realize the ticket has winning numbers, a meteor flys through your ceiling and kills you.

Now adding outside influences the likelyhood can go up. Like a house fire causing a round to cook off, or an improperly maintained firearm with a hair pin trigger firing when set down to hard or something. but even then, its not likely. Thats why you don't hear very often about that sort of scenario happening.

According to the Brady bunch, yes. They can also walk on their own and make critical decisions too.

I have heard stories of people trying to say that an unchambered gun went off... yeah after they cocked it back and pulled the trigger

                          Remington's response

                          Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

According to MSM this is true, they also walk themselves down to commit mass shooting, jk

                            MSM not so much.

Answer to your question, not without some outside forces initiating it.

MSM will never subscribe to this theory.
