    Hot Weather Hat/Cap

I'm not a hat wearing type shooter, but after brass to the eyes (behind the glasses) and the heat I'm caving in to the elements.

What hat/cap do you shooters wear when its hot outside? Or do you do a combo hat & wet towel?

I've been using this for fishing and shooting for the past 4 years and it's been excellent for keeping brass out of my face, ears, collar, etc. Very ventilated and keeps me cool on 100+ degree days on the water and in the desert.

Trusted by businesses since 2003. 200+ hat styles from $1.25. No minimum order, 365-day returns, BBB A+ rated. Ships fast from Atlanta. Order today.

straw hat with large brim. I'm probably the only one using this at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center.

At an indoor range a ball cap works fine.

When outdoors I use a boonie. The 360 degree brim helps keep the sun off the back of my neck. Boonies don't offer the protection of a cowboy or big straw hat, but they are lightweight and really flexible.

I fish in Ariz. in the spring & have learned outdoors type hats are a must. I shoot in the rural heat of SE SD county in the summer too. Outdoors research makes some great hats, problem is a lot of them aren't exactly fashionable. I shoot on family property, I really don't care.

Don't mess around with rags or towels & get a hat that covers the entire back of neck, you have a large artery there, keep it cool!

The hotter it is, the more skin I cover. I see guys in my bass fishing club have issues every year I fish the river with them. Surprised none have had a stroke yet.

Tilley Endurable. I'm bald so I know my hats, and the Tilley is the best hat I have ever worn. One in each truck, one on the boat, one at the barn, a couple in the house....

Vented full rim hats from street vendors. They last about a year or so then they fall apart or are tossed.

They do cause problems with bench shooting, the rims get pushed up from the rifle stocks. Then I switch to baseball caps.

Go to REI. They have a bajillion different options at the store and even more online. I also use those neck gaiters made of that cooling cloth (when wet). Those can be used just on your neck or you can convert them into all sorts of configurations including a balaclava. I get those at Lowes. Lowes also carries caps made of the same material that you wet to cool.

I keep a keffiyeh (shemagh) in my range bag as a backup.

I had to Macguyverize a shoelace and paracord lock to keep it from blowing off my head and into the drink on windy days. I highly recommend it.

Ive tried a lot of hats. The best design is a trucker style ball cap in a khaki or light color. It shields your eyes, top of head, and face. The mesh back allows heat to vent out better. Boonie hats dont have enough ventilation and get in the way of wearing ear pro. Other large brimmed hats just get in the way and most are very hot.

For extra protection, I wear a spf rated neck gaiter to protect the back of my neck and sides of face.
