I've never thought of a 1911 as a defensive handgun for me. The appeal for me is the historical significance as a classic American pistol and service side arm. So the 1911 I own is a bare bones model, and it's a fun gun.

Obviously the preferences on 1911 pistol styles are as varied as their owners though, so I could see the appeal of a rail if I was using it as a defensive side arm.

Looks cool, but not on my 1911. I guess if you are using it for HD or an "operator" and need a light it would be needed

I had a M9A1 but liked the lines of the 92FS more. Ended up selling the former to help purchase the latter. Originally had thought a railed model I would like more- turned out to be the opposite.

I have a 1911 with rail that has a TLR-1 light on it for HD. To me it's purpose built and I like the idea that I can one hand it.
