    Call or not call

Hey guys. I sent my Colt XSE 1911 to a smith . Was told 8-10 weeks. Its now going on 6 months . He is a well known smith . I dont wanna bother him but he has my gun . A Colt. On the fence about calling him . I dont wanna piss him off . He has my gun remember. Do I just call and see if things are ok ? Or just wait? Sent him an email and no response . He did send me mail today . He was extremely sorry . Understands if I just want my gun back without any work done . I sent him a message today. Told him I can wait 8 more weeks. If it's gonna go beyond that , then it needs to just come home. Waiting to hear back . I will call him in the morning if no response . Thanks for the help guys .

I'd call, just to check in. He's a nice guy, I don't think you'll upset him if it's really 2x the quoted time. Was he procuring parts or sending anything out for finishing, etc. if so, that can have an effect on delivery.

But I'd still suggest calling. You can do so in a nice, respectful way, and he should be fine.

4 weeks = 1 month 6 months = 24 weeks - the (we'll say 10) 10 weeks he promised =14 week overdue. and you sir are worried about calling him, i'd be on the phone every lunch break until i got what i paid for. do the work in the time you promised or send me my firearm back at no charge.

        everyone is replaceable.

For sure call him. 24 weeks when it was promised in 10? You are far more patient than most would be. Nobody had better be getting mad at you for calling at this point. In fact, he should have called you by now to let you know why he's so late.

On another topic...whatcha havin done to it?

With 'smiths, the longer you wait, the more it costs. Damn those guys sometimes, lol. Call & be nice.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Well said. It is way overdue and probably forgotten/sitting in a box.

if you are giving your gun to be worked on by a one man shop gun smith or even bigger shops (#1 and#3):

1- order your own parts and send the gun with the needed parts. Smiths are better at working in the shop than ordering parts on the internet or they may wait and order parts for several jobs at a time which adds to your time.

2- Call and ask when he can schedule your gun to be worked on and send the gun in accordingly. Again, call ahead (before shipping) and ask if he is ready and have time now before shipping the gun. It does not do any good to send a gun to a shop that is booked solid for the next 20 weeks and expect an 8 week return.

3- Expect extra wait time if the gun has to be shipped from smith to a refinishing shop for coating/plating. Verify this with the shop so you do not get disappointed later.

Give him a call. That's unusual for him.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I would remove the gun from his premises.
