A few folks commenting should read Capsticks ManEaters and Death in the Long Grass. Once a cat has attacked a human they will continue until killed, because we are for the most part clumsy easy targets.

I 100% agree that the laws protecting the cats are making them bolder and thier fear of human is diminishing. If you live where they live or go where they go be extra careful.

Don't hike alone or get separated from your group. I knew the girl that was attacked in oc years ago while mountain biking. Her friend saved her life by playing tug if war with the cat. Cat had the head, friend had her feet until other bikers showed up and threw rocks at the cat and scared it off. Same cat killed a guy on a bike riding alone that same day.

IIRC, the cat was defending its kill. The guys chain fell off, the cat was already stalking him when he bent down to fix it. So now this 6 foot tall man is 3 feet tall, the lion attacked, pulled him off the path to enjoy its meal and here come the girls to take away dinner..
