Once you shoot a mountain lion in lawful self defense, you are required to notify the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife within (if I remember correctly) 72 hours. Yes, you can shoot them in self defense but you must be prepared to make the case that you were actually defending yourself not just shooting because you saw the lion and he was close to you.

jeremiah12--Just keep thinking that way. That one may leave people/pets alone now. But it might not when it gets older and has a harder time hunting. Also the next one may not be the same.
I am sure the gal in Sac that was killed on a bike/hiking path did not think she would be diner for one.

I also lived next door to a Fish And GAME biologist (until he retired and moved out of the state) and his studies were not as glowing as your friends. Then again he watched the whole picture before the dept became the anti-hunter, tree-hugger Fish and Fairy dept it is now.

I want jeremiah12 to go hug a mt. Lion. If he does that, i might believe we can coexist. Until then, we are in their turf and they in ours. Plain and simple.

That or tell that to the little boy mauled by the mt. Lion while 10 adults try to beat and play tug-a-war using the boy as the rope. And to top it off, this some in the bay area where its suppose to be safe.

- If you see a mountain lion you will almost certainly have no reason to shoot it.
- If you are attacked by a mountain lion, feel free to shoot it.
- Coyotes are not game animals, have no season, and require no tags. As such you can shoot coyotes whenever you want provided you are allowed to shoot guns in your city/county and you are using bullets that comply with current non-lead regulations.
- If an animal is attacking your livestock you may kill it to defend your livestock.
- If you are shooting coyotes just because, you'll need a hunting license.

You can shoot coyotes and dogs just for worrying your livestock in most areas zoned for livestock.

if a mountain lion is planning on attacking you. you are not going to see it. if you do shoot one, you better be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was in self defence.

You can shoot in self defense or in protection of livestock. If you do, make sure you contact fish & game or sheriff immediately after. Take photos if you actually kill it.

This was brought up in a meeting last week for work. Fish & Game was present at the meeting.

You will never see a lion that is about to attack you in time to draw and fire.

That's what I was thinking. Mountain lions will very rarely have anything to do with adults, but young children are definitely at risk, especially if they like to run ahead. Problem is, by the time you see the mountain lion he will already be on top of your boy, and you sure do not want to use a gun on him then.

In fact, I can't think of any SoCal dangerous animals against which a handgun would be all that effective, compared to the inconvenience - legal or otherwise - of carrying one. The most dangerous animals are actually snakes and ticks. The former are easily avoided and the latter, well, I think using any gun is simply overkill.

The solution is to carry a stick or axe handle of some kind. I know that is technically illegal too, but some of my neighbors have been carrying them openly while walking their dogs (we have coyotes here too), and no one seems to care.

As an avid trail runner who gets waaaaay back in the hills & known big cat territory, I like to have something and about the only thing I can carry is a knife. So on my hydration pack, at my shoulder, I carry a punch knife as punching an animal seems more reasonable than trying to slash or cut with a normal knife like you would a person since I'd be on the ground. Easier to hold onto and every punch is a deep cut. I expect to loose in the end, but it's about the best option I think.
