Ammunition walked to checkout?

No. It goes directly to the register for purchase. If the customer has more shopping to do we leave it behind the counter and inform the employee(s) working the registers.

I just purchased some ammo from Big 5 in Orange County and the clerk handed the ammo I wanted to a manager to walk it up to the checkout counter. I asked him what that was about and he mumbled something about new laws. A quick search here and CalDOJ didn't reveal anything. Is this just local BS or store policy? Any info would be appreciated.

They do that at Big5. I think, it's their store policy, they usually call their store policies laws though. Many there don't know the difference, I think. That being said, who cares. As someone pointed out, they can carry it to my car, for all I care.

most stores do have the ammo behind the counter but I was happy to see the basspro in manteca had it grocery store style

They did this to me at Big 5 when I went to buy some handgun ammunition. The guy stood around while I was paying for it, so when the cashier handed me the receipt I just walked out the front door, popped my trunk, and motioned for him to put it in. That's what I call service .

They do it all the time when I go buy .22lr that is on sale. Must be a Big 5 policy.

Several years ago I was in a Big 5 looking at a Mosin Nagant. I wanted to remove the bolt so I could look down the barrel, but they had a trigger lock on it. I could not pull the trigger to release the bolt so I asked if they could take the trigger lock off. I was told they could not and the reason that they gave me was someone had come in to look at a gun, pulled a live round from his pocket and chambered. it. If that really did happen I could see them being leery of people having access to both guns and ammo at the same time.

Last year at Big 5 I bought my 870 and some shells for it. They told me I had to take the shotgun to my car and come back in to purchase the shells. By the time I came back in the guy helping me, had my shells at the register.

We had someone pick up their shotgun, buy some shells, load it, and hold up the store at one of the big5s I work at. Appparently he was just sitting at home when the cops showed up, guess he thought no one would come after him. :P

I've only seen it done at big 5, but I had someone there do that as well, the manager walked the ammo up to the front counter and rang it up himself, but when I go to turners, they just fill out the paperwork and hand me the ammo to take up front. Oh well, doesn't bother me in the least, like so many others before me said, if they want to carry my ammo so I dont have to, i say let 'em

We do it at turners for most stuff behind the counter. Also if a customer is buying a ton of ammo or a case or more, I'll usually walk it up there so the customer can keep looking around while his or her ammo waits up front for them instead of wieghing them down.

It is BS, and unwritten policy exercised by fearful liberal idiots in positions of petty power.

It's at that point where you ask them to do that for you. If they refuse then you'll have to think long and hard if you really want to roll the dice on buying one from them or go to a gun show and buy one that's 50+ years old and just walk out with it.

I've always carried my own ammo to the checkout at Big5. At both Big 5s near me, the firearms counter is maybe 20 ft from the checkout counter in direct line of sight.
