I would probably shoot it once every 3 months.

Remington 700's are a little pricey.. I wonder if they make it in 770.

Barrel life depends on how fast you shoot, how fast the bullet is moving, how much powder is burned, how big the hole is for the burning powder to move though and, most importantly, what your accuracy expectations are.

Benchrest shooters might call a barrel shot out within 1000 rounds or so because their groups are averaging 0.1 inches larger than they were previously. A hunter that expects their rifle to shoot 2 MOA will continue to use the same barrel despite round count so long as the rifle shoots within 2ish inches at 100 yards.

Unless you're chasing bug hole groups, you'll likely never 'shoot out' your barrel.

What distance do you consider long range?

              Skip the 770.

                I don't know. I can't recall ever firing a bolt action. I owned a 770 briefly but I never shot it.

You're going to have to be more specific if you want more specific answers to a specific question.

If you just want to occasionally shoot at something far away with an inexpensive rifle buy a savage axis combo in .223 with a 1/12 twist, some 45-55 grain varmint ammo (vmax, etc.), and a 5 inch AR500 plate. Hang that plate on a couple of shepherds hooks at 500 yards and shoot it.

At that range it'll take about half a second or more for the bullet to reach the target, it'll take another half a second or more for the sound to come back. By the time the scope settles down from the shot you'll be able to look through it and see the vapor trail from your bullet as it heads down range, allowing you to track your own shots. Through the scope you'll be able to see the bullet splash on the plate and you might be able to hear it.

I would think that the 22-250 is a little light for "long range shooting."

a lot of people are gravitating to 6mm or 243 for that kinda stuff.

There is an old Remingtion in 22-250 on the ranch that has taken more coyotes than any other rifle out there. Still shoots great.

Perfect for varmints. Flat shooting, lots of speed.

I don't know who makes a good value bolt gun these days.

I have a left hand Savage 110 made in true mid-60s chambered for 22-250. It likes Sierra 52 gr BTHP at 3700 fps. It groups them in less than 1/2 inch at 100 yards. It has enough snuff to take a bobcat at 1/4 mile.

I've shot a 9" twist 22.250 in a custom Savage in 1,000 yard F class matches shooting the 69 grain Sierra Matchking bullets. No problem shooting in the 370-380 point range (out of 400 possible) as long as the wind didn't act up.

I got some 22-250 amm0 a while back from a supplier who accidentally sent it with my 30-30 order. They said "keep it". So I have been sort of thinking about adding an affordable 22-250 to my collection, but knew nothing about it untill this thread, thanks
