When I was 10 my dad would take me shooting at Fremont pass right off Hwy 14 just north of the 14/I-5 interchange. It was just outside the LA city limits. My dad was LA DA so he knew that discharging a firearm within city limits was illegal. Fremont pass was just outside the city. Can't do that now, all of LA County land is a no shooting zone, unless you are a member of a street gang.

late 70s early 80s, I had a newspaper route, and had occasional trouble with a couple of dogs on the route, so I carried a CO2 BBgun on my bike. I only had to use it one time, though. Never had an issue with anyone about it.

My HS in Fresno would set up a rifle range in the cafeteria for the JROTC/Cadets to practice.

I forget where I bought my 1894 Winchester but it wasn't a gun store.

I grew up in so cal. in the 60's-70's. My friends and I would ride our bikes to the hills with our .22 rifles across the handlebars in the afternoons to plink acorns.

In high school, every pickup in the student parking lot had a gun rack in the back window holding a pump shotgun, a .22 rifle, or both. Doors were locked, but the guns weren't. Nobody wet themselves over it.

High school even had a smoking area. Royal High in Simi Valley 1977-1980. I'm sure none of it would fly today.
Just taking up space in (what is no longer) the second-worst small town in California.
