Just How Extremely Free We Were

Guns get to come up in my classes a lot. We talk about laws, requirements, burdens, etc etc. I enjoy, being older, telling my students what is was like "back when we were free."

My favorite example was my high school physical education coach. He also served as the golf coach and when we played in the foothills (calaveras or del pedro) we often ran into rattle snakes on the course. One day as we were letting out of school for lunch he catches me, asks me if I have my shotgun with me so which I said no. He said go home and put it in your golf bag just in case.

Imagine the day...when a school teacher could tell a minor to not forget his loaded gun....ahhh freedom was grand.

That is awesome and how things should be. i blame parents for how screwed up things have gotten, good parents = good kids = better chance for good adults.

Yes it was no big thing to bring your pocket knife to school or your shotgun so you could go hunt after school.
People had gun racks (WITH GUNS) in the rear window of pick-ups and actually drove around like that.

I was one of those people in high school. In middle TN where I am from a fair number of us students would get up at 4, go deer hunting before school, change in the school parking lot (would get arrested for public indecency these days) into our school clothes. After school we would go duck hunting until almost dusk then if we had not gotten a deer in the AM or had another tag it was back in the woods until after dark. If I got a deer and had to track it or drag it out it was an acceptable excuse for missing class.

Also, I remember in JR high I brought my hunting recurve bow to archery class and no one thought anything about it.

My buddy was telling me, that in his class, opening day was empty. and if you didnt get a deer, you had to take the exam later.

The Penn State campus I attended in 1972 had a student arms room where our firearms were stored for off campus hunting although most just kept them in their dorm rooms.

On most Friday afternoons, a buddy and I would split from school, drive over north of Half Moon Bay, and shoot our .22's against the bluff at Surfer's Beach...before the parking lot fell into the Pacific.

More than a few times, a San Mateo county deputy might stop by, ask us how we were doing, and give us reminders about basic marksmanship. He'd stay maybe 15 minutes and leave. Zero hassle whatsoever. Times seem to have changed a bit.

Not only would we hunt before and/or after class and have our guns in our cars/trucks, the track meets all used blanks in real pistols at the starting line. We would also hunt rabbits out in back of the high school. Technically, it was school grounds.

The principal would keep his shotgun in his office if he hunted before or after school that day.

Funny how there was never a blood bath that liberals keep claiming will happen if this was allowed.

I road my bicycle all over Escondido as a 10 to 12 year old kid with my pellet/bb gun slung over my shoulder. Never once did anyone batt an eye or question me. This was the early 70's. God help us now.

Santa Claus brought me a 22 bolt action Mossberg in 1952. In 1953 @ 12 yrs. old I got on the train at the Union Station in Los Angeles with my rifle in a soft case for my trip to Oakley, CA. to visit my Grandma and aunt and uncle.

It was in the seat with me all the way!

My mom grew up in the country, and she said it was common for the boys to carry a rifle to school. They would put them in a closet when they got to school. Arkansas, Missouri in the late 40's/ 50's.

I attended high school in California in the 80's and we hunted before school, left the guns in the trunk, attended class, and hunted evenings.
