Take the advice above, and determine which eye is dominant before you do anything else. If you're not shooting with your dominant eye open, everything else is irrelevant.

Start with finding your dominant eye, and go from there.

If you are cross eye dominant, it will not effect your ability to be an excellent shot with a handgun, but shooting with your non-dominant eye will make it difficult to be consistent.

If your sights and target are all lined up correctly, and assuming the sights on the gun are zeroed correctly, then your shots should go where they should go. Whether you use your left or right eye doesn't really matter.

However, you may be doing some other things that will consistently place your shots elsewhere and it's possible that your body position (as a result of using your left eye) may not be helping the situation.

'First thing I'd do is make sure that the sights are aligned correctly. Have a few others shoot it and see where they place their shots. Or use a sand bag or other support.

I have factory sights on the Glock. I haven't shot it in a while, so I'll see if I have the same effect as the J frame. The sights on the J frame are not moveable. The rear is cut into the frame. The front is fixed.

Using the wrong eye or wrong technique?

Try this drill with your snap caps. Go ahead and grip pistol normally. Set up finger on trigger normally. Fire snap cap loaded pistol but do not let trigger reset. Now pull trigger firmly some more while you watch your sight picture without letting trigger reset. Even if you think you are pulling trigger back straight this may show you either your trigger pulling is to one side (likely the right edge of trigger pushing rounds to the left and down) and/or that your grip is insufficient. This drill has helped myself and some of my friends that have had the same exact problem.

I think I figured it out with your help gentlemen.

When my finger gets to the back third if the trigger movement the tip of my finger touches the frame and begins to pinch my skin. Unconciously I was moving my finger over to the left in the last few millimeters of trigger pull to prevent it from pinching me. This movement both placed the sight picture left and down.

I held my finger there a few seconds longer than normal to show the skin on my finger after it's pinched. You can see a crescent shape in my finger that gets wedged behind the trigger and before the frame.

I will have to adjust my finger position I suppose. Talk about small details!

You are using way too much finger. Pad of your finger should be on the trigger.

This works well for me being left eye dominant and right handed.

I think you're right. I just tried it, and I can keep the sight picture better aligned with the "right-most" portion of the pad of my finger on the trigger.

I'll try that a bit next time I go to the range.

                      ....
If you're right handed and left eye dominant this works great and is pretty easy to adjust to.

But keep in mind that all discussions about eye dominance only applies to shooting with both eyes open. If you're shooting with one eye closed it doesn't matter at all.

Using the wrong eye or wrong technique?

Im cross eye dominant. Right handed and left eye dominant. What i do is line the gun to my left eye without moving my head to make it natural and i train to keep my both eyes open. I practice that since day one i started shooting handgun. Now it is all natural, practice practice.

I had the same problem. Right handed but could only close my right eye. Was told to close my left eye when aiming or switch to shooting lefty...

I Practiced how to close my left eye only and now shoot decent.

The easy solution is to move your dominate eye to align with the opposite hand.

The better solution, if you want to be a better all around shooter, is to move the sights to align with the dominate eye

The optimal, and hardest, solution is to learn to shoot with the other hand...ask Robbie Leatham how well that has worked out for him

I do it this way for my crosseye dominance, too. Just hold my hands two inches over to the left so that it's lined up with the left eye. Sometimes I have to do a quick aim check by closing my right eye, then open it again prior to pulling the trigger. I shoot well this way, at least for 7-10 yards.

Maybe I'll try the head tilt method and see what's easier or more accurate....

Here's my last target. 50 rounds of .357 mag with my J frame. The target was about 20 feet from me.

I'll try some more dry fire drills. I have been doing them a few days a week with both my G19 and J frame. I'll post my new results when I get back to the range, probably Friday.
