Let talk about ear protection please

    Shooting rifles with muffs

Was looking to DIY molded ear plugs, but reviews are IFFY, so maybe CGn's crowed can offer some insight to this question, DIY, or is there something better.

Not looking to spend a huge amount on this, just need a comfortable product that works well, & easy to use, also fairly long lasting, that works at indoor/outdoor ranges, but mostly allows me a good purchase on my rifle stock.

    What say you gunner's.

I hardly ever have problem shooting rifles with my Howard Leights.

    What muffs do you use?

I use Howard Leights, and at indoor pistol range use foam plugs also.

But it's difficult to get a nice purchase on my rifle stock without having to move muffs around, and losing there effectiveness, plus there just uncomfortable for longer range shooting, like form a rest.

        There must be something better.

I run EP7. Can carry on convo normally but hearing safe even on rifles. Much cheaper than electronic muffs.

            Good timing on this
I have been using muff's for decades and lately using electronic muff's and they work really well. I have hearing loss and I really like e-muff's because they amplify sounds and I can hear things. But I am getting more and more into rifle shooting and the muff's can get in the way, I went trap shooting 2 weeks ago and I had to use foamie's to get a good cheek weld as the muff's were in the way of me getting a good view of the rib (borrowed gun).

Several people in the class were using electronic in the ear plugs and after talking with them, I really want a pair now. Yike's they cost as much as a good trap gun. When I later that day found out how expensive they are, I was surprised that out of 11 people in the class, 7 people had in the ear electronic plugs.

Different but same subject, I ride motorcycles, I have had 2 different custom in the ear plugs made at bike shows and I found they did not work as well as foamies, so I am very sceptical that they would work well in shooting. But that is wind noise in the helmet not a gun shot, I must say I am very worried about plopping down $2k and finding they don't work well.

I am looking at ESP brand ones as they seem the best from googling around.

Its either that or stick with the $0.99 foamies ( I have not idea how much they cost, I buy them in bulk for my motorcycle since I daily ride rain or shine )

                I am a double bagger....

Foam Ear plugs- properly rolled up and inserted

                Electronic muffs over that

                Peltors

One thing to consider. Ear plugs generally are better protection as they typically cut out more of the low end boom compared to muffs. Low end boom generally affects high end frequency loss. Since my profession deals with my ears, I pay close attention to the effects of hearing protection. The best form of protection as described below is using both.

Properly fitted earplugs or muffs reduce noise 15 to 30 dB. The better earplugs and muffs are approximately equal in sound reduction, although earplugs are better for low frequency noise and earmuffs for high frequency noise. Simultaneous use of earplugs and muffs usually adds 10 to 15 dB more protection than either used alone. Combined use should be considered when noise exceeds 105 dB. Note that for such situations, it may be that there is no type of hearing protection that will stop a very loud noise from affecting you.

For rimfire I just use ear plugs, then for centerfire I add elec muffs over the plugs. I only turn on the elec if I need to hear range commands.

This is my setup as well for both indoor and outdoor. I always double up.

MSA Sordins and Surefire EP7 plugs - I never realized how crappy the Howard Leight and Peltor 6s were until I made the switch (used them all).

Peltor TEP-100 plugs are just ridiculously better than any muff I've used.
