Guns strategically placed around the house?

I live in a pretty safe area, and by the grace of God I've never been in a home intrusion situation. This weekend, the police chopper was flying around over my house blasting the physical description of somebody they were looking for, so being on high alert, I grabbed my shotgun and a 45 and made sure they were loaded, just in case.

I have a 2 story house and I was upstairs at the time, and at the moment my firearms are upstairs. Since I was already upstairs it was fine, but I got to thinking afterwards, what if I had been downstairs and some nutcase with nothing to lose busted through the sliding glass door and all my guns are upstairs? Or worse, what if my girlfriend (soon to be wife) was home alone and that happened? While I've taught her how to shoot and properly handle a gun, if one is not readily available...

Now I'm thinking about stashing 2 or 3 hidden away in various locations so protection is never too far away. We don't have any kids yet so that is not an issue, and I don't carry when I'm at home. How many of you stash guns around the house just in case? One upstairs and one downstairs?

Usually have one within reach, upstairs or down.

I keep my safe open and a pistol out near me when I'm home. All in the safe when I leave.

It sounds paranoid, but think about where you spend most of your time at home (bedroom, kitchen, living room) and common points of entry (front door, back door, ground window). Those are the row/column headers of a spreadsheet where in each cell you figure out where you could safely store a loaded firearm you could access for that combination. Try to find the smallest set of locations that satisfies all (or most) row/column combinations.

The other alternative is to keep two lockboxes in your house--one near the entrance you commonly use and another near your bed. Strap a loaded pistol on when you get home, put it away when you sleep or leave the house. This is a poor man's version of CCW carry where you put it on when you wake up and don't take it off until you go to sleep.

I have three floors & I'm never more than two or three seconds from a gun. I realize you don't have kids, but there are probably times you'll have company (kids or adults) who shouldn't have access to firearms. Besides, you don't want to arm criminals. I suggest you look into these:

One story house, two big loud dogs. I can make it from the front to the safe in less than 10 seconds. Then theres the question of if my carry gun is even locked up and not sitting atop the safe (no kids at home anymore). I've had a few instances of the helicopter flying over my neighborhood spotlighting all the yards looking for someone. Thats when the dog go out (to howl at the helo) and I strap on (don't usually carry at home).

Having a gun accessible downstairs is a good thing. But make sure it's in a lockbox of some sort.

Thieves are remarkably adept at finding hiding places. And how much would it suck if you walked in on one of them, only to be shot with your own weapon.

When bad things happen they can happen suddenly and super fast. A gun in the next room might as well be on the moon. I had two incidents at my last residence that really brought this point home. (I've since moved)

One in the bedroom, one by the front door and in living room.

I suggest to keep it on you and have magazines in those strategic locations. Also it's not *that big* of a deal if you find a $20 mag and $5 of ammo is gone, instead of a loaded weapon.

I have all in safe, ' Cept 1

One is the door answering gun. Won't say where, but it's a semi, ready to roll.

OTOH, I have a trunk monkey that I've been keeping in the house. He'll provide protection as a last resort.
