More details about the search please. Why, when, did they come up all swatty and tactical, or approach you relaxed?Eh, when ATF search warranted my house, one safe would not open. I had been warned not to spin the dials but I guess I did and the damn thing was not working.
They called a locksmith who drilled it out, did it very nicely and the new lock I had to buy covered up any evidence of the prior drill work. The cost was not too much.
Same thing happened to me. I was frustrated (right after I got the safe) and was having trouble. So I spun the dials pretty hard a few times...not smart. Fortunately only one number slipped and by only one digit. Now I'm a bit more careful.Sorry, not sorry.

NO
You turn the dial.....Spinning the dial fast is the one of the worst things you can do....(Per my Safe and Locksmith guy)
Actually he says GO Ahead, more work for me when you do.
Its akin to spinning the cylinder and slamming it shut on a revolver.
Looks cool, but not.Last edited by RTE; 02-21-2016, 4:43 PM.Comment

Two days after a burglary where the police had spent three hours investigating me and my collection, I got a call saying that they had car stopped someone with one of my missing pistols. The location was around a half a mile from me. They wanted me to identify the pistol. So I went. When I got out of my truck and walked up to the police car, the "suspect" came toward me - I stated "you don't even handcuff them?" And then the local Police told me they were helping ATF serve a search warrant on my house - as they handcuffed me.
Of the fifty or so agents/police officers - most looked like out of shape bureaucrats toting bullet proof vests and MP5's. Some were actually eating donuts and drinking coffee. My neighbors got a good show. They weren't rude but I am missing at least one 13 round HiPower magazine.
You should expect a similar response if you have registered Assault weapons, a toy MP40 and plastic (fake) grenades. Your local PD won't know the difference when they report their find to ATF.
Also this was near Christmas 2005, so I think ATF took the occasion to have their office party prior to raiding my house. It started around 2 pm and the last one left around 1 am, if memory serves.
Not an experience I would wish on others.Comment

TRY THIS FIRST, it happened to my safe but only on the 2nd number. I couldn't open it for a while finally I just went past the number and the damn thing opened.Had this happen to me. Luckily the first and last numbers of the combo had only made shift of two digits in the direction they were rotated. By subtracting 2 from those it works fine. For example 19-35-55 became 17-35-53. OP. Try over shooting the combo by a couple digits in the direction of the turning.
If you do get it open then remove the door cover and lock. Open the back of the lock and you should be able to see the tumblers as they line up to verify the new worn lock combo. What I found inside was that the inside of the rotor plates had keyholed where they contact the dual shaft.
The above story is true. Only the numbers were changed to protect the innocent.Comment

Does your safe have a relocker? If so, it might have triggered, especially if it has a glass trigger.***Honesty is the Foundation of One's Character***

I tried dialing up and down every combination 5 digits in both directions, dialing the combo fast etc.
It is an American safe with a re-locker but it wont engage unless the lock is punched or drilled wrong.
The manufacturer has not been very helpful at all. I'll wait to see if he comes through before I drop his name on here. Its supposed to be a very reputable maker/dealer.
I have a guy that coming over tonight that says he can get into it. He says if he has to drill it, I'll never be able to tell when he is done. Very reasonable too.Comment
