Maybe the shooters wasn't aware of what's behind their target (which is one of the important gun rules). Would of been nice to let them know so the next person/persons wouldn't end up getting hurt. But very glad to hear that you and your son made it out with no harm. I also agree about being too laxative when shooting out in blm or open land, don't always assume people know the unwritten rule.
I would never be laxative out there. No bathrooms.

Sounds like that still would have been dangerous, given these guys were shooting parallel to the road. Even if he kept driving down the road to notify them, they still might have taken shots. He didn't even know they were shooting dangerously until the shot whizzed by. It really irks me when people do stupid stuff like this. BLM doesn't have "rules" necessarily, but they have cautions posted on their website for safe shooting practices. I'm not aware of laws that prohibit shooting parallel to roads, but there are laws about shooting over washes/stream beds and roads, near buildings, campsites, etc.

I hear you guys about trying to educate them and I did think about it. but like I said I watched them through the binoculars and they didn't look like upstanding individuals so I wasn't about to put my son in that situation. I thought about calling the cops but didn't now that I look back on it I really wish I would have.

Wow thats a scary event OP, glad your and you kid are ok. Just another reason I dont go to any public ranges or BLM. You cant fix stupid.
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)"

It's probably kind of silly, but this is why whenever I roll up on a spot, I sound my horn and make myself visible to whomever else is out shooting there.
